I want to use my wireless Xbox 360 controller on my PC. I originally thought about getting a wireless base station thingy and using that, but can you use the usb charging lead to change it into a wired controller that will be recognised by Windows?

Unfortunately the USB charging cable is used for charging only. You would need to buy a wireless reciever. Article Here.
Otherwise you will need a wired controller, which is connected to the controller interface.

If you ask me it kinda takes away some of the fun from playing on a PC, I like using a mouse and keyboard. Still, better graphics though.
