I have just set up a wireless nework in the house but how do i check/find out if somone else is connecting to it from outside

If you have implemented encryption etc then they shouldnt be. If however you havent then anyone within about 100 yards will be able to access it.

should be a lan status page, *i think* it should display the current machines connected to the router/wireless access point and all you have to do is check to see how many machines you have and compare to how many IP addresses are on the network.
