I'm pulling my hair out trying to sort my mates laptop. He's running Vista 32 home. I can connect to my wireless network, then it disconnects and I cannot re - connects, then it re-connects for a bit, then disconnects and on and on....

I've tried it on different routers, both allow other laptops to connect fine. I've done a fresh install of vista. The wireless adapter driver is the latest. i've disabled powersave on the wireless adapter. it isn't the firewall. etc etc... tried everything.

reckon it might be a fault in the hardware. Any ideas before I send it back?

Have you tried asking support for the wireless card provider? There are usually a lot of configurable options for the wireless card and they might be able to make some suggestions.

Have you tried changing the wireless channel? I had similar issues and changing the channel cured it.

Yep, sounds like the channel your using needs to be changed, had the same trouble with my Wii... funny it never bothered the laptop or PS3, but thats wireless for you ;)

It's not a firewall issue, i turned it off, same problem.

Changin the channel hey....I'll give it a go. Never done it before but I'm sure my friend google will help. Anything I should know before doing it?

Also, i get the same problem if I'm physically connected to the router, if this changes you diagnosis!

So, you are saying you connect the laptop to the router via an ethernet cable and you still get the problem?

In that case, is there any additional software running on the laptop that might be the culprit, e.g. Norton Internet Security?

Also, I would imagine that Internet Explorer internet connection settings will need to be set to "Never Dial a Connection". I am wondering if somehow in these settings there might be a "Disconnect If Idle" setting that is somehow kicking in (even though you won't be using dial-up so it shouldn't be an issue, but just a vague suggestion).

Can you get the laptop onto whatever Windows workgroup you have? i.e. can the laptop join the Windows network you are running?

As I said in my first post, it's a fresh install. No norton on there. I have installed AVG, but tried with it enabled and disables.

I have also tried firefox to rule out a problem with IE. It isn't IE.

Out of interest, what laptop is it?

Which routers have you tried it on?

When you say you have tested your connection with other laptops, where they Vista too? Maybe it's Vista related?

If the router has some IPv6 capability, perhaps this could be confusing Vista??

what channel did you change it to?

Channels 1,6,12 don't overlap so you're better off picking one of those - may be worth downloading netstumbler and doing a quick scan of what's about and change to one that's not being used.

All the channels overlap to some degree, so the only ones that don't overlap with each other are 1,6,12

With the laptop plugged into the router with an ethernet cable, how long will it stay connected for before it disconnects?

The chip or laptop may have power saving features which are making it disconnect so this might be worth looking at.

You have still not said what routers you are testing the laptop with.

It's random. Sometimes can't connect, sometimes can for a minute, sometimes for half hour...

I have already disabled the powersaving features (they were on), same problem.

I can only tell you one router - Belkin F5D8631-4

Thanks for your help. Head scratcher isn't it.....

So, you are saying that in addition to the Belkin F5D8631-4, you have tried this laptop on two other routers (with it connected by ethernet cable hopefully), and you got exactly the same symptoms?
