i have just sold my Phenom II x2 560BE. I want to go up in the world because i got the P2 560 after having a Q6600 and the system just feels wrong. I dont just ant to buy a 6 core if there is no point.

My board is: MSI 870-C45
Ram: 8gb geil 1600Mhz 4X2gb
GFX: BFG 8800gts 640 OC2 (getting a new card payday)

I use my pc for web, light gaming and lot's of video ripping and converting.

Looking to spend £150 MAX but dont want to hit the top if i dont have to.

For video work, there is a point getting a 6-core CPU. I'd take the 1055T and clock it a bit.

Or wait for Bulldozer to come out, then you'll need a mobo and CPU. The old phenom will see a dip in prices as well.

Come to think of it, you will then have the choice of Sandybridge and Bulldozer anyway. But it will be a budget of £250-£300.

EDIT : Going from Q6600 to a dual core phenom sounds wrong anyway. Did you fry it?

EDIT 2 : Have you tried unlocking the extra cores of your phenom?

if i went to intel i wouldn't get Sandybridge i would just get an i5 same for Bulldozer there is no point me having a top notch system as i will never push it.

You say you do a lot of video work. That would certainly push the CPU. What's 'feeling wrong'? Slow encoding?

And for that, there is always the option of opting for CUDA / ATI Stream tech. Dunno if it would be more cost effective to go through a GPU upgrade.

the cost of DDR2 is stupid and i didn't see the point getting a new DDR3 775 board as 775 it dead technology, got the AM3 board and a low cost CPU with the plan of upgrading latter (now).

Yes the CPU unlocks and clocks to X3 @ 3.8/3.9 but i dont like the idea of spanking a CPU every time i turn on my PC i have had 478 and 775 CPU's die in the past and they tend to take out other items too.

Q6600 + 8800gts 640 + 2gb DDR2 = 250fps when converting video's (3 at a time)

560BE unlocked@ X3 3.8 + 8800gts 640 + 8gb DDR3 = 133fps when converting video's (1 at a time)

there wil 100% be a GPU upgrade @ 25/02/2011 payday

Or if you want a quad get a Phenom 965 or 975 + custom cooler

i have water cooling.

i was looking at the 955 or 965. then i got to thinking what about a low cost athlon ii x4 640 + 40gb intil ssd

the athlon ii x4 640 is way beter than the P2 560 i have and better than the q6600 i had

SSD is a good option but I really think 60GB at a minimum.

The Crucial C300 64GB had been on offer for £80 this week from a competitor so would have been perfect with the Athlon II 640. Just checked and unfortunately its back up to £90 now.

You may find that your not satisfied with the upgrade from a Q6600 to an Athlon II X4 640 as they are fairly similar. benchmarks here.

Also remember next generation SSDs are due for release very soon.

edit

I would get the PII 955 and put the rest aside for GPU/new gen SSD.
