amd athlon 11 x2 245 (2.9 standard)

intel e6600 (2.4 standard)

ive got both cpu's and im building a computer for front room. i will clock them both but on stock fan on each so will not clock that far. not sure what boards there on but the amd one looks cheap and only has 2 mem slots

thanks for any help

e6600s were great overclockers, maybe hit 3ghz with the stock fan, but seriously if you just got a cheap AC7 fan or something you could get 3.4-3.6 no problem.

  • AMD® Athlon™ II X2 245 (2.9GHz)
  • Intel® Core™2 E6600 (2.4GHz)

If both processors were running the same speed then the Intel® chip would offer more processing power however both chips are not running the same speed! :p

The Intel® E6600 is a popular CPU from 2006, based on a 65nm process it will run hotter and use more power than the newer AMD® Athlon™ II X2 which is a 45nm chip . . . the AMD® chip offers an onboard memory controller (IMC) which reduced System-Latency and will have a more "snappy" responsive feel to it compared to the E6600 . . .

The Intel® E6600 could be clocked up to 3.0GHz pretty easily and maybe without too much extra volts? . . . with 3rd party cooling and a heap of extra vCore those chips could hit 3.6GHz . . .

The AMD® Athlon™ II X2 245 could be clocked up to 3.6GHz pretty easily with a little bit of extra volts and possibly even using a stock cooler . . . the 45nm Regor based chips will certainly run cooler and with less volts than the 65nm Conroe!

There's plenty of decent AMD® uATX motherboards selling for under £50 if you look around, four ram slots, decent built in DirectX® 10.1 IGP and even HDMi out!

the athlons should top out at 3.6-3.7.Im pretty sure they're better clock for clock than the first gen core 2's but i wouldnt imagine its by a great margin.

some good advice there thank you. the card ive got for the front room computer is a 5770.
so would just need a good board for clocking. i think its a 939 socket and it seems the price of them are going up. but with the 775 socket there cheap now.

ive got bacicly 2 set-ups but one will be for my sister to go on the net so either will do. should i sell the e6600 add a little and get a better cpu?

Hi koooowweeee :)

not sure what boards there on but the amd one looks cheap and only has 2 mem slots
Ah I misread the above . . . so you have the boards and stuff . . .

Download CPU-z and tell us what it says under these tabs please (for both machine) :D

  • [Mainboard]
  • [Memory]
  • [SPD]
Or post up screenies if you can . . .

What is it your trying to achieve with the "front room" computer build? . . . what sort of stuff are you wanting to do mainly?

Let us know all the hardware you currently have and lets see if we can get you sorted!

Either will be fine for a general system, if that's what you want them for? You haven't really said about its intended use, budget, any other parts you already have etc.

The AMD will be a touch cheaper to build, thanks to the motherboards, but will be a bit noisier. The stock Intel cooler is better and quieter. Not much else to say until we know more about what you want it for though.

Complete BS.

i want the pc to play games witch it does at low res think the cpu is bottlenecking the hd5770

not to bothered about high res ive got another setup in my bedroom for that. just trying to get the best out of this one

Ok, I know the chip, am familiar with the ram but not so sure about the mobo? . . . doesn't seem to be running the Athlon™ II X2 quite at its full potential (1GHz HT-Link? . . 1.6GHz CPU-NB?) but all looks like its working! :D

So is that mobo empty and not installed in a system (along with the chip?) . . . any other DDR2 memory knocking about?

If you used the DDR2 from the AMD® build you could clock the E6400 up to 3.0GHz (9x333) in that mobo which would be reasonable . . . 2GB of DDR2 isn't loads but would be fine for most things except intensive gaming and such like?

You would need a GPU but the Radeon HD 5770 if its 1GB would probably work best if it had more than 2GB of system memory? :p

So you got a Intel® Core™i7 + nVidia GTX480 for your personal uses, sounds good . . . what is this socket 939 kit you have?

ATM it seems you are short of a GPU and some memory? . . . its a pity that the AMD® mobo doesn't have an IGP as that would be fine for your sisters surfing machine . . . let me know what other kit you have stuffed up your sleeves and lets try to straighten out this higgle-dee piggle dee at your end!

in the amd now i have a hd5770 card and that ram. but ive swapped some stuff with a guy on another forum and im getting the e6600 and 2 x 1gb drr2 6400 geil.

so all together i have

amd board cpu and Corsair DDR2

e6600 BIOSTAR P35D2-A7 1x1gb ddr2

ati 5770 1gb and nvidia 6200le

and hdd and writers and case's

dont mind selling 1 lot add a (very) little to and get a better cpu

also sister is not bothered what she gets because its just for the internet and maybe the odd cd

Can you make one post with every single bit of hardware you have please . . . I'm not sure exactly what RAM you have?

That ASUS M2N68-AM PLUS only has two memory slots . . . the BIOSTAR P35D2-A7 (Intel® P35 Express) board has four ram slots along with the Intel® Core™2 E6600 . . . if you got a bunch of DDR2 sticks it kinda makes sense to go with the Intel® board and stick your Radeon HD 5770 in there and overclock the chip . . .

Not really sure if that AMD® board is much cop? but the AMD® Athlon™ II X2 chip is pretty good, could sell that with the ASUS board or perhaps buy some DDR3 and sub £50 AMD® AM3 mobo (inc IGP and give that too your sister?)

I suppose if really going for minimum expense you could just give your sis the ASUS/AMD® combo and pick up a 1GB/2GB stick of DDR2 from somewhere but then your need a GPU?

Really need a complete list of *all* your spare hardware to sort this out! :D

amd board cpu and Corsair DDR2

e6600 BIOSTAR P35D2-A7 1x1gb ddr2 800mhz

ati 5770 1gb and nvidia 6200le

and hdd and writers and case's

thats it really.

i think that im better off selling the e6600 and getting something like a e8400.
the p35 board has more slots and should be better for clocking.

so really i need a better cpu and 2gb more ram. then ive got a good computer

so computers will have

1
e6600 (sell buy a bit better one 8400)
BIOSTAR P35D2-A7
1x1gb ddr2 800mhz (upgrade to 4x1gb ddr2 800mhz)
hd 5770

sisters computer

ASUS M2N68-AM PLUS
AMD® Athlon™ II X2
2 x 1gb ddr2 677mhz
6200le

will check prices if the amd stuff is worth more ill sell them and buy newer stuff
