witcher 2 or skyrim?

Is the witcher 2 open world like skyrim or is it more linear?

Not open world, kind of open area tho

Each chapter is set in a city and the surrounding area for exqmple in which you pick up tasks and quests to go about this area freely, so it feels open but has a linear path for thestory which makes that a lot better imo

Have you enjoyed previous free-roamers like Oblivion and Fallout 3?

I didn't, prefer story driven stuff, so love both Witcher games.

The Witcher 2 is stunning. The graphics are amazing, with a beautiful colour palate and plenty of life in the world. Combat is fluid (and personally I never found it difficult at all, even pre-patch). The story is well thought out and engaging. CDProjectRed really knocked the ball out of the park with that game - it's only their second title AFAIK and in terms of scope it is much more ambitious than the first Witcher game. Gives me shivers to think what The Witcher 3 might be like if it's an equally big leap forward.

Skyrim is pretty brilliant too, but IMHO it's just a more flawed experience. Many of the things that annoyed me in Oblivion still annoy me in Skyrim - Bethesda haven't really done anything revolutionary with the series. Combat is still clumsy, the protagonist is still silent and very, very dull, the world feels lonely despite the life they have tried to breathe in to it and there's still very few choices of any real impact - no branching storylines etc. Like Oblivion, it's a fun sandbox game - once the novelty wears off it's the sort of thing you go back to once in a while to kill an hour or two or try out the latest mods.

Biggest problem I have with The Witcher 2 is the patch. It's great that all of that content was free, but the download is 10.55GB! That's just one language as well. Personally, I enjoyed playing the original with Polish voiceovers and English subtitles (mostly thanks to the hilariously awful English voiceover in the original). To get Polish and English, the download weighs in at a hefty 11.4GB!

Oh, I should warn you. The Witcher 2 convinced me to buy the book that the stories are based on (The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski). It comes as highly recommended if you enjoyed The Witcher.

On release Witcher 2 difficulty was absolutely, unbelievably all over the place. You could die 15 times on the tutorial levels then breeze through half the game. It also had lots of random bugs. All that stuff was sorted out a long time ago, although it has perhaps leaned too far towards being easy, like most games. Still, it's much better balanced now.

Witcher 2 is a better game, but Skyrim has lot to offer if you like exploration.

Personally, I would play Witcher 2 first, Skyrim afterwards.

Both are great but Witcher 2 has my vote, it's far more character and story driven, which in my view provides for a richer experience. In Skyrim you roll your own character, they don't talk and there is less cohesion to the story as its easy to lose the plot with such an open world.

Get both if you can but between the two I'd rather do the Witcher route, in fact I just installed it the other day on my fresh win 8 installation.

I liked them both. Which was odd, as I'm not much into RPG games. I liked Skyrim for its modding and also for its free roaming type gameplay and I could just go anywhere and do side quests and felt like a real world.

But I also liked Witcher 2 for its story and whilst it was free roaming it felt a little more linear then Skyrim - even though it wasn't totally linear so games such as Tomb Raider for example..

Witcher 2 looked very nice, but Skyrim once modded looked fantastic. both are good games. I put more hours into Skyrim.

hmmm I bought witcher 2 enhanced edition on steam on some sale in the past but was on my old system and it didn't run that well. Might have to give it a whirl with my new system and actually play it since you guys are really talking it up.

Witcher 2 was fantastic... until you get the hang of the combat system, it can be a bit frustrating, but ultimately, it's nice to have a game where combat is a challenge instead of click click click.. I win!

I *still* need to do another playthrough with the other path!

The Witcher 2 is stunning.

Skyrim is pretty brilliant too, but IMHO it's just a more flawed experience.

Agreed, i felt Witcher 2 is everything a modern 3rd person RPG experience should be, from creation (through PC development then worked for console play) , distribution (DRM free) and support (Admittedly it needed it, but massive patches and additions post release for free).

Bethesda really need to break ground on a wholly new engine imo, as it's probably the only catalyst to get them to improve their creative process (hopefully the new consoles should give them that opportunity). Skyrim was really nice, but was so disappointedly held back creatively, so they could ''access a wider audience'' both on the PC and consoles.

Its awesome that so many people have the ability to mod Bethesda sandbox games, but its becoming a bit ridiculous that you need to wait 2-3+ months for mods post release, to have a stable and enjoyable Bethesda sandbox game. With lackluster DLC compounding the issue.

Turned into abit of a rant but...just my 2c etc..

Skyrim all the way for me, Witcher 2 has all the elements in a game that I should like, but for some reason I just can't get into it, god only knows I've tried to like it :(.

I think skyrim was a really enjoyable game, purely for the atmosphere and sitting back with a xbox controller and just enjoying the game.... Music, atmosphere, colours, graphics (with mods) etc... But I must admit now I am at about 35 hours of gameplay it has dawned on me that the gameplay mechanics and actual gameplay are indeed rather shallow and there is not really much actual skill to the game.... But as an experience with modded graphics with an xbox controller with TV/hifi system it was great.

I played the witcher2 for about an hour and didnt like it... As above I wanted to like it but the style etc. didnt really do it for me... Maybe I will reinstall it and give it another chance.

play witcher 2 if you dont mind sacrificing open world for an immersive storyline and characters, play skyrim if you prefer open world and dont mind sacrificing storyline, characters etc.

have about 100 separate game saves on the pc, had at least double that on the ps3. still play it occasionally.

skyrim :D

this thread has actually reminded me to buy the witcher though...
