ive got a grey box with bt outside my maisonette with wires going out of it to other properties and one coming to the front door of mine which has then been cut presumably by decorators.

Can i just find out the colours of the wire and where they go in a phone mounting box and ring bt and see if they activate the line to my address and plug a phone in?

is there any cost for trying and also any know what colours go to where if i was to buy a box from ******

Wont work. You are not allowed to touch the BT side of the customer termination point and from the description it sounds like this is what you want to do.
If there is a line showing against the property then BT can activate it and send an engineer to sort of the NTE5, or if there is not sort it out..... but I expect you'll get stung with the £120-ish fee either way.
