Hi all,

Really am getting frustrated now on a customer's computer.

Trying to open certain programs they get teh "windows installer service could not be accessed" error.

It wasn't listed in Services and after an hour or two I managed to get it back in their after some registry tweaking, started the service and set to automatic etc. to no avail.

Still get the error.

Vista 32bit SP2. What can I do? Just trying things now that I know won't even benefit it like sfc/ scannow (which is currently running)...

Any help much appreciated!

I've tried all of these things.

I think it was a stupid "PC fix it mechanic software" he installed that's done this.

A. Start the Windows Installer process in Windows Services.

1. Start > in the search bar at the bottom, type in: 'services.msc' without quotation marks. Press Enter.

2. In the opened list of the services find Windows Installer service. Right-click on it and choose 'Properties'.

3. On the General Tab set the Startup Type of Windows Installer to Manual.

4. Click Start button to start the service.

5. Click Ok.

B. Unregister and re-register the Windows Installer:

1. Start > Run(Step A.1.), type in MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER, and then click OK. Even if you do this correctly, it may look like nothing occurs.

2. Start > Run(Step A.1.), type in MSIEXEC /REGSERVER, and then click OK. Even if you do this correctly, it may look like nothing occurs. After you run this command, the operation is complete.

3. Try your Windows Installer-based application again.

C. Windows Installer Registry Fix (in case Windows Installer service is not listed in the services):

1. Download msiserver.zip and Save it to the PC.

2. Unzip the file and extract msiserver.reg to the Desktop.

3. Right-click msiserver.reg and choose Merge.

4. Click Yes to confirm the changes.

5. Restart Windows.

OK I think this may be related to the RPC service.

In the Log On tab it is set to Log on as :

This account: Network Service
Password *********
Confirm Password ********

Hardware Profile

Undocked Profile Service Enabled

Trouble is I can't disable this profile and choose log on as "Local System account"

Which I think may solve my problems.

Any ideas?

If I try a repair installation off the Vista DVD that came with the laptop (Dell) would that fix it do you think? If so I should ask the guy for the DVD.
