I have the lastest WMP 11 beta, and suddenly I can't play videos in the XVID format.

I've downloaded and installed the XVID codec pack, still no joy.

Does anyone else have this problem? Any ideas on solutions?

Any help appreciated,

Jon

Don't forget to select resize, and scale it to your desktop rez. :) Set OSD on and it'll show input/output differences

Don't do that. Uninstall all codecs (except those included with the OS) Install FFDSHOW.

def do this :)

also..
get quicktime alternative lite, and if you must, real alternative lite

all these are free from free-codecs.com

Uninstall all existing codecs on your computer. If possible, run a registry cleaner (but not necessary).

Go here and download the full K-Lite Codec Pack: http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

Really for your own good stay clear of codec packs. Just install the specific things you need, as and when you need them. Sure it's much more longwinded but it's a *lot* safer.

Windows doesn't handle codecs brilliantly and when you have problems with masses of codecs installed as you'll get with packs such as this there's sometimes no way to fix them but a full reinstall of Windows (i've had this happen to me once whilst using an old K-lite pack).

I don't understand what's unsafe about codec packs?

K-Lite has never failed me, and is much less stressful than getting all the individual ones working correctly.

When you install the indivdual codecs, you get it working, you "acquire" a film which won't play, and you're left stumbling through mazes trying to find out which is the right codec. :mad:

And now often do you come across a new file format? Not very often most are Xvid, Divx video, OGG or AC-3 audio. Rarer Makroseka, Real. Why install a whole load when you never need them?

I've installed..

FFDSHOW
AC-3 Filter
Realtime Alternative
Quicktime Alternative
OGG encoders/decoders

And everything plays fine. So why install a dozen video/audio codecs? Finding out what codec it uses is easy, gspot. Install the new codec, job done and you don't need to do it again. This is what K-Life installs

You've deliberately quoted the full pack, when the average user would only need and use the Basic pack - which installs the following:
K-Lite Codec Pack Basic

Contents of version 2.77:

DirectShow video filters:

* XviD [version 1.2.0-dev build 2006-04-20]
* DivX [version 6.2.2]

DirectShow audio filters:

* MP3 (Fraunhofer) [version 1.9.0.311]
* AC3 (AC3Filter) [version 1.09a]

DirectShow subtitle filter:

* DirectVobSub (a.k.a. VSFilter) [version 2.37]

Tools:

* GSpot Codec Information Appliance [version 2.52 beta 1 build 2004-09-15]
* VobSubStrip [version 0.11]

Just to take it further, here is the Standard install:
K-Lite Codec Pack Standard

Contents of version 2.77:

Player:

* Media Player Classic [version 6.4.9.0 rev. 611]

DirectShow video filters:

* CoreAVC [version 0.0.0.4]

ffdshow:

* ffdshow [rev. 2543]
* ffdshow VFW interface

VFW video codecs:

* Windows Media 9 VCM [version 9.0.1.369]

DirectShow audio filters:

* Vorbis (CoreVorbis) [version 1.1.0.79]

DirectShow source filters:

* MP4 splitter (Gabest) [version 1.0.0.3]
* MP4 splitter (Haali Media Splitter) [version 1.6.224.23]
* Matroska splitter (Haali Media Splitter) [version 1.6.224.23]
* Ogg splitter (Haali Media Splitter) [version 1.6.224.23]
* FLV splitter (Gabest) [version 1.0.0.1]
* MPEG-TS splitter (Haali Media Splitter) [version 1.6.224.23]

Tools:

* GSpot Codec Information Appliance [version 2.52 beta 1 build 2004-09-15]
* Sherlock [version 2.0]
* VobSubStrip [version 0.11]
Still not very much, really.

You don't need to install these from the k-lite pack (FFDSHOW supports them)

* XviD - ffdshow decodes this
* DivX - ffdshow decodes this
* MP3 (Fraunhofer) [version 1.9.0.311]
* AC3 (AC3Filter) [version 1.09a]- if using digital out on your soundcard you don't need this, just set to SPDIF in FFDSHOW for AC-3 & DTS. In fact in a HTPC you don't want AC-3 filter at all, as it'll upsample stereo soundtrack and different frequency to 5.1 and 48khz. Best to leave native channels and frequency and let the av amp do processing on the audio (at least for me I have Logic 7) as that'll expand stereo/pro-logic/5.1 to 7.1
* DirectVobSub (a.k.a. VSFilter) [version 2.37]- enables subs in FFDSHOW.

?

DIVX will decode all mpeg4 based videos fine, even xvid, why you would need to install xvid seperately ? or even a pack of some sort which in turn installs the codecs that are not needed?

Intervideos WinDVD AC3 filter is also better quality than the free ac3 filter - the windvd filter is also free, just install any windvd version and never use it, the ac3 filter works universally with any player.

All you need to play /any/ downloaded video be it anime, subbed or xvid etc is:

- Mediaplayer Classic (you can also use WMP if you want, I prefer MPC because of it's power and also for its time-based bookmark feature)
- DiVX play bundle (when installing just install the codec and mpeg4 playback support)
- Vobsub
- Matroska Pack lite (for various subs that vobsub does not handle)
- WinDVD trial (for the higher quality ac3 decoder)

This is how I do it and I watch many types of videos weekly without a single fault.

This way when one update syou can just update that one codec, not have to reinstall the whole pack again which in turn /can/ lead to further problems as many people have experienced.
