i don't know why anyone would use vlc as their main video player. its full screen interface is non existent and really is inconvenient. i use it for files that are difficult to play but generally i'm very happy with wmp. as for audio i use itunes.
WMP for videos and the odd music/sound files
VLC for stubborn videos (haven't had any for ages mind)
MPC for RealPlayer videos
Winamp (5) for albums and music collections
Creative mediasource for playing music, ripping & burning audio CD`s. Its quick and easy with a built in mp3 encoder and works well with gracenote (CDDB) for song titles etc. It also deals nicely with our collection of mp3 players.
Not sure if there is a workaround if you do not own a creative product though.
