To view a file that is in hdtv "format" i need a hdtv codec right? Which doesn't come as standard with xp pro or nero, so i downloaded and installed 'ACE Mega CoDecS Pack' and it worked but now media player is playing up big time, freezes all the time, won't play normal dvd's, just totally screwed up really.

So i was thinking to rid the problem, uninstall ace mega codecs pack which is probably going to now mess with wmp and nero, so i will uninstall both of them aswell. Then reinstall nero and get the new wmp11 from microsoft, but where can i get a decent reliable codec pack? Or really just a hdtv codec? Does the DivX/Xvid download come with it? Or does wmp11 come with it?

Fresh install, ACE has probably screwed your system up (yay for codec packs!)

Do what bledd has typed, there is no such thing as "HDTV codec" it's usually mpeg-ii or mpeg-iv (there are others but those are the main ones) ffdshow should play most of them, if it doesn't just install them individually not with a mega codec pack.

Indeed. I've been on the receiving end of that rubbish. Just as well I was planning on a clean install anyway, just not at the point the codec pack destroyed WMP for good. Never, ever, again.

Just got rid of media player 9 and quicktime for the ones you suggested and also got rid of real player for the real player alternative off the same site. Now i can see videos on youtube but i get no sound in either IE or Firefox any ideas?

Download gspot and point it to the avi file, it'll show what codec it uses and also if you have it installed.

Basically I use

FFDSHOW
Quicktime Alternative
Realtime Alternative

That plays most things, just needed a couple of directshow filters (OGG, MPC and FLAC) for Media Portal. I don't need AC-3 filter, but you may do.

I've downloaded a Directshow filter pack which includes the OGG, MPC and FLAC codecs but i still dont get any sound on youtube. In the Firefox options where you can change the way it handles certain file types is there anything i need to change now that i've changed all my codecs?
