When I play a DVD rip containing a single VOB file my media player stops after say 30 minutes (perhaps 4 chapters). However when I rip it to multiple 1Gb VOB files recommended by the ripping software the rip plays in it's entirety.
Does anyone know why WMP behaves that way?

WMP or MPC-HC? :p

VOB files are specifically limited to 1GB to maintain standards compatibility with various dvd players. I would recommend you keep it that way.

You shouldn't even be ripping to VOB anyway, you should use MKV or AVI.

It is the same in either although I use MPC-HC within MediaPortal. Everything plays really well with the 1Gb VOB files and seamless.
Why do you advise against VOB, please.

VOB is designed for DVD-Video. I think it only supports MPEG2, which is very old and limited, especially if your main use is playing it on a PC.

MKV supports MPEG4 streams such as H264 which is a much newer and more efficient format, especially if you're playing it on a PC. If you're ripping a DVD, you should go for MKV or AVI.

Thanks for the advice. I was using DVDShrink for the VOB rips. What similar software would rip them to your chosen format?
