Hey guys,

I have a problem with video playback in Windows Media Player. The video has become very distorted and pixelated, and almost goes glassy looking. I have all the correct codecs installed and WMP is up to date.

There are a few videos that I am having this problem with but it is isolated to WMP, as when opened in VLC the videos play fine.

Please make suggestions,

Many thanks,
Jonny

Here is what I'm trying to say,

VLC Playback

I never used to have this problem so a fix would be useful, as I prefer using WMP to VLC.

Strip out all codec packs you may have installed, and install only FFDShow. That will at least allow you to see if the problem is a codec conflict, and to be honest, you should need anything more than that.

Can't add anything to what the above poster said. ffdshow should have everything you need for just about any type of file.

CCCP is good in that it's not actually a codec pack but just ffdshow and a couple of other useful bits (subtitle filter, haali media splitter etc.) always kept up to date and they also have a tool for checking any codec packs previous installed and whether they are still on your system. Option to install their recomended players, which are Zoom Player and Media Player Classic. Takes a little to get used to but I would recommend MPC above about all other plays now.

The only other things you might ever need is AC3 codec (ffdshow does this but not that well) and CoreAVC if you struggle with HD files (but it's not free, very cheap though.)

Ok, I've uninstalled the Codec Pack I had been using and uninstalled VLC, but the videos still play without the codecs installed. I've hunted around a bit and it looks like the codecs still exist but they aren't within the add/remove programmes list.

How do I know which codecs I should be deleting using something like Codec Sniper or DSFMgr?

Thanks,
Jonny

Problem solved, I installed the KLite Codec pack over the top of the original codec pack and it must have detected and fixed problem codecs or registered its codec as default.

I just need to get rid of the original codecs from the 1st pack and all should be golden, right?
