Hi there.

I've got an irritating little problem here at the moment.

For some reason my Media Player plugin for IE has stopped working.
I haven't used it for a while, so not sure when it went wrong, and therefore what program/update may have caused the problem.

If I visit, say, the BBC News website

http://news.bbc.co.uk/

There are various (media player) video clips available, from news headlines to the weather, etc.

If I try to load a page, I see the media player plug in, it says

"Connecting to Media..." as usual

Then it just goes to "ready" and that's it!

On the BBC site, there's also the option to launch in standalone player, which loads the main WMP program, and plays it fine.

I also tried a radio station that I like to listen to.
Same thing, "Connecting to Media..." and then just "ready"

If I right click on the WMP plugin, go to properties, and copy the URL, and then paste it into Media Player, it plays perfectly.

I've disabled firewalls, made no difference.

So, the files are obviously there, and working, and media player can obviously play them, just not the plugin.

I have a feeling it was something to do with file associations.

The other day I loaded up a site with some streaming video on it, and expected WMP to play it, but Winamp popped up and played it, so I disabled the .asx association in Winamp, and then set it for media player.

Unfortunuately, no settings that I change in the plugin have any effect, I've tried disabling it, and reenabling it, rebooted the computer of course... I've no idea! It did work, now it doesn't!

I've googled about, found various people reporting the same problem, but no actual fixes that work for me thus far.

So, if anybody has any idea, please let me know.
It's not a showstopping problem. As I said, I can right click the WMP11 plugin, go to properties, and copy the URL, and paste into Media Player, and still listen to the radio station, but I'd just like to get it working properly again.

Many thanks,
Ian.

btw. OS Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 (official, from Windows Update) with Media Player 11.0.6001.7000

Sorry to be cheeky and bump, but it's been a while, and I thought I'd just try to bump the thread once, in case somebody who knows about the Media Player plugins scrolls past.

Thanks,
V1N.

Grrrr, still trying to get this working.

Out of interest, I thought I'd load IE7 64bit, and try it, and that works perfectly. Obviously some setting somewhere wrong, preventing the WMP11 plugin working in IE7 32bit.

This is the link I've been testing it with

http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/...2398.stm&news=1&nbram=1&bbram=1&nbwm=1&bbwm=1

As I said above, on my IE7, it just pops up with "connecting to media" then "ready" and nothing plays. If I paste the stream URL directly into Media Player, it plays it, and if I click the "launch standalone player" it plays it.
It also plays on my other PCs, and as I now discover, plays fine in IE7 64bit.

I've been googling for ages, found similar problems, but no working fixes.

I had a similar issue on XP and it was VLC media player that caused it, un-installed cleared registry and it worked fine, but that was with Firefox.

Thanks for that.
Was it the same issue?

ie. My Media Player Plugin DOES load, it just seems unable to buffer anything.
I assume therefore that MIME and file associations are correct.

I do have VLC installed.
At first glance, I can't see any options for file associations built into it, but I'll have another look later.

btw. this is what that BBC site does for me

The page loads, with the plugin, and tries connecting

then it gives up, and says ready

If I right click on the plugin, and get properties, the stream itself is

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsa/n5ctrl/tvseq/n24/bb/wm/video/news24_bb.asx

I can paste this into media player, no problems, and as I discovered today, running IE7 64bit works fine too.

It really is a strange problem, and a shame I can't just download the plugin as standalone, and install it clean ;)
