.wmv Files to .mov

I have some very large (4 to 8gb) wmv files that i would like to play via my tv.
My mac will play the files eventually, but it takes ages, to the point that you think that its crashed. If i converted them to .ov files would that make them better to play on the mac? They are HD 720 files, so do not want to destroy the quality at all.
Trying to figure this out now as to see if its worth getting an apple tv or not, if mac has issues playing them, then apple tv stands no chance....

Any pointers would be cool, thanks.
 
Thanks, but i have that. Kinda beggining to think that the files are just to large to view in frontrow etc as i get to the movie in frontrow and as i said before, you think its crashed before it gets to play them lol

yeah, pretty sure its the size too. What is the normal size for hd movies then? I will try and convert one tomorrow i guess, get main pc working a bit :p
 
Ah, did not know that it scanned the file first, makes a lot of sense though, why it takes so long that is.
