Always on the M1.....
Just got a couple of discs with WMV HD No competitor talk please! and can't seem to get them to play on my PC.

Doesn't have any problem with the region it seems in that it will load up the menu, but then won't play. Just keeps saying "loading video..."

If I try and play the .wmv files directly with WMP 10, it has a hissy fit and says it can't play (can't remember the exact message).

Any ideas how I can get it to work?

Is it a DRM issue?

last one of these i tried you had to run a program on the dvd to generate a key to be able to play the file, give that a go maybe?

did you download the DRM update for Media Player?

Not sure, will have to check when I get home. Should I or shouldn't I?

And which version of WMP to use? Not sure which one I have.

Just got an email saying from No competitor talk please!:

"First, please allow me to apologize for the problem you experienced with your shipment.

I have checked our website and found that the format for the DVD's you have purchased has been listed as Region 1. Please note that this DVD's can be used only in U.S and Canada.

As the cost of return shipping is prohibitively expensive in this case, there is no need to return the faulty item.

I have requested a refund for the item, including associated shipping costs. This refund should go through within the next few days and will appear as a credit of $42.34 on your next credit card billing statement."

Nice.

Now, still can't get it working even if I change one of my DVD players to Region 1. I assume this is cos I'm in the UK and it checks my ISP?

I tried using a proxy this morning but with no joy, it still won't play it. This I assume is cos it already has details somewhere on my PC as to where I live?

Any suggestions as to how I can get this working?

Going to put some spare components into a Linux PC tomorrow - if I don't connect to the net, where will it think I am?

The DVD itself plays fine, but the 2nd disc with the WMV HD won't play at all, no matter what region I have or whether I go through a proxy or not.

At least I've got a refund, so that's something!

Did you have the wmv-hd codec installed on your pc?

Assumed that WMP would download the relevent codec? Any pointers as to where I can find that when I get home?

And I can play the trailers fine, so surely that suggests that the codec is installed. Or is there more to the codec for the full length movies?

its HD WMV not vobs. unless it requires a proxy (which youd know by your firewall asking for permission) it should be a case of running the program on the disk itself to generate a short term key.
