Has anyone managed to get one of these to work with Windows 7? I'm having a hard time getting the drivers to work. I've googled it and tried some solutions but none have worked.

I take it you are using "WN111v2 Software Version 3.0"
If not then you will need to update your drivers. It may also be worth trying to use "windows zero configuration"

In which case dont worry about what the netgear program is doing, you should have a wireless signal icon at the bottom right of your screen. Left click on it and select your network, then click on connect. It should ask you for the network key, type it in and you should be done.

It wont detect any networks and says there's a problem with the device driver. I've installed it properly and unistalled and reinstalled but it keeps saying there's a problem.

It sounds like its still using the driver off the CD or a different incompatible driver, you could try booting into safe mode to remove the old driver/software and then boot into normal mode with the dongle unplugged then go through the v3 Setup again.

The driver that lists in device manager for the dongle is listed like it is below -

Driver Provider - Atheros Communications Inc.
Driver Date - 20/10/2009
Driver Version - 3.5.0.7

If yours is not listing the details as above you know its wrong, you could try forcing the update by manually updating, choose update, then brows my computer for driver, choose let me pick, and see what other drivers you have listing.
