What is going on in the world of Desktop replacements. I was idly looking around at potential replacements for my XPS 1710 (m7950GTX) as it's starting to get a little long in the tooth. I was shocked to see just how little progress has been made on the mobile GFX card front.

A quick scan of the usual suspects (Dell - and Alienware, and Rock) and I was hugely disappointed. They're still working from 8800GTXs (and no I don't consider the 9800GTX to be an upgrade) and Ati 3xxx series. How is it that they are now a full 2 Generations behind the desktop parts?

I would have expected to see, at the very least, a mobile 260 or 4850 available by now - any idea when things are going to catch up - they are in danger of getting a full 3 generation behind over the next couple of months which seems a little odd

I can only assume that cooling is the main factor, and market share and also cost in redeveloping the gpu in a completely different package, i would never consider a gaming laptop as a full time solution but handy for the odd time you might take it round your mates or on holiday its a very niche market and in my opinion the wrong choice for a dedicated hardcore gamer. I can't ever see them catching up as it were until the sales justify the R&D.
