Anyone think this is an absolute joke? Since when have teams fielded there strongest line-up in every match? And how on earth can they rule on what is the strongest line-up anyway?

Yes, it is an absolute joke. Are the Premier League going to start fining Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea when they field weakened teams that in their opinion is in breach of rule E.20?

as above, this is an absolute joke. how can this be possible? :S why hasnt arsenal been fined ridiculous amounts in the past for playing what is pretty much thier reserves?

Why is it a joke? It's supposed to be a competitive league and Mc Carthy's team selection was tantamount to Wolves throwing the game and giving United a bye.
Wenger was right, the rest of the teams in the prem now can only compete with United over 37 matches.
And I think you'll find Arsenal have only fielded youngsters/reserves or whatever you want to call them in cup competitions. This has never been the case in the league.

The fine is for not fielding their strongest team -
it was deemed the club had breached Rules E.20 and B.13 by failing to field a full-strength team.
so what happens when a big club rests a player like Rooney, Drogba, Gerrard or Fabrigas? They are playing with a weakened team - even with a large squad those players cannot be replaced without weakening the team. Utterly ridiculous ruling

Big test is Aston Villa's FA Cup game just before the CC Final

Can just imagine Fergie saying something in a press conference just before AV's FA Cup replay in a mind games kind of way but also a shot across the bows of the FA :)

Big sides play weakened teams before big games a lot. Just because the Wolves fringe players aren't as good as the bigger sides fringe players doesn't make it any different.

It is the manager that picks the team based on what is best for HIS side, not everyone elses. Why not just let the Premier League pick the team every week and the manager has no say if they're going to start punishing teams for this.

From what I can tell, it is the Premier League that have fined Wolves, not the FA.

Its a farce, they are trying to say because he actually came out and said he'd field a weakened team in the hope of winning the next game, while most managers simply make the changes, though most aren't asked why.

Arsenal along with most prem teams should all have received similar suspended(and by now, several real fines) for fielding weakened teams in the prem league over the years, and most of the cups, champs league included.

Hell teams do it in the world and euro cups, its insane to punish a single team for doing whats asked. LIkewise Wolves, by fielding a weaker team in one game they thought they couldn't win, improved their chances of their strongest possible points tally for the season, so one weak game might have lead to a stronger season. LIkewise giving players a chance for fitness and form in a game they had no chance of winning, is better than giving them a chance in a game they might win but can't with less fit/in form players on the pitch.

From recollection Spain and Portugal played weakened teams in the final group games in the Euro's because they were already through, I'm sure most other teams did the same when they had the chance.

Just more evidence that the "big teams" are treated favourably by the authorities compared to the rest of the league.

ok fair enough - as everyone else has said its not fair, its going to be hard to govern and its going to get less youth /academy players blooded in the future
so to me thats all around worse for the game than a few here and there that "might be " a gift

If anything it works against the big teams:

1) as above - youth team players/up and coming prospects get less games because all teams HAVE to play their "best" team

2) as the wolves game points out - even with a more important game coming up the "smaller" team have to play their best team , rather than the weaker one they would normally choose to to rest more experienced / senior players

I can't belive the this. It stinks of bias against smaller clubs. Also who's to say what your strongest team is, it's imposible to police.

Clubs rest players all the time. He didn't want to loose the game, he just wanted to give his team the best chance of winning the next because it was in the clubs best intrest.

How does it work against the big teams. They just turn a blind eye to the big teams doing it. How much did Man Utd get fined for the game against Hull away last reason? Nothing.

Surely they were punished by not winning the game

Isn't that how football works? You field a weaker side than your opposition and (more often than not) get beat.

you are missing the point.
Wolves won away at spurs 3 days earlier. The only player to start at man u that also played at spurs was the keeper.

Its basically condceding the game before its even kicked off, what makes it worse is that man u were in questionable form at the time

And when have United played the same team when they've got a game 3 days after another one? It wasn't basically conceding the match at all.

1. United were extreme favourites anyway
2. The team he played were hardly comprised of the caretakers and the dinner ladies, they were still the first team squad.

I mean did we give Aston Villa 3 points by not playing Scholes and Berbatov? Where do you draw the line?
