Hey there, long time lurker, first time poster.

Basically, my situation is as follows: I won this RAM from a Kingston competition not long ago:

http://www.valueram.com/datasheets/KHX1600C9D3X2K2_8GX.pdf

I received it yesterday, but there's a problem: My motherboard/RAM setup is currently DDR2. As such, I need a new motherboard.

My processor is currently a Core2Duo E6750 @ 2.66ghz with a 775 socket.

Because of that, my list of motherboards that can utilise both are slim, and I've chosen this one as a potential replacement for my DDR2 problem: http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5G41CM_LX/

My problem is thus: Since the new RAM is 1600mhz and this Mobo supports upto 1333mhz, are there any downsides to putting it in this motherboard?

I ask because I don't want to upgrade any further with my CPU in addition to a motherboard due to lack of funds, also, if it did work this would suit the purposes of my machine well.

Any answers you guys can give on the situation will be greatly appreciated! If you need any further information, just reply. Thanks! :D

Thanks for the prompt reply!

I heard that the timings of the RAM and other factors mean that the RAM would have compatibility issues such as periodic crashing.

I'm just wondering if I'm taking a risk with the technology gap.

It should just automatically clock the RAM down to 1333mhz.

So it's not a downside as such. But you're definitely not going to be using it to its full potential.

furthermore, if you're going to be using 32-bit windows your PC won't even be able to use the full 8GB so you could again not even be utilising the full potential of the RAM.

Personally, I'd just sell it. It's worth £80 brand new,

Ah, it does sound a lot like a wasted effort, but my current situation involves a Gigabyte DDR2 motherboard with a broken RAM slot, meaning I can only have 2GB DDR2 right now max.

I'm looking into 3D Modelling as part of my education, so winning the RAM as a godsend for an excuse to upgrade. I was meaning to upgrade to 64 bit windows to accommodate the change (Maya scene rendering for example). I already have a downloaded 64 Bit windows 7 Pro from MSDNAA (free legal education software provider for universities) on disc for when the upgrade is made.

It's good to know that it won't cause any lasting damage or downsides past a lack of speed potential.

And you DDR2 currently can only really be a max of around 1066mhz anyway so up to 1333 is going to be an improvement either way I should think :)

I think im right in saying your down clocking the RAM *should* allow you more scope to tighten the timings a bit more than if it was running at full speed. This will go someway to offseting the negitive speed effects caused by the underclock.
