Hi all, this is my first post.
I have a system that has been running fine for a couple of years. recently it has been playing up when starting from cold, fine when from standby. When I press the power button nothing much happens, the only noise I can hear is a faint click from one of the hard drives, no error beeps, and nothing on the screen. It starts after a while normally after I have opened it up, checked all the connections etc, any ideas?
Asus m2n sli deluxe m/b
Amd 64 5600 dual core
2 gb ddr2
MSI GeForce 8600GT 256MB PCI-E graphics card
2 x 160gb sata drives
1 x 500 gb sata drive
win xp
OCZ 600W StealthXStream Power Supply

I would suggest a good starting point would be the hard drives, possible one or both is failing. Download the diagnostic tools from the appropriate site, ie western digital; seagate etc and test the drives?

If both drives check out then test memory using memtest. Then psu and so on. Process of elimination.

PS welcome to the forums.

If fans and stuff aren't spinning up then it could be your PSU is having trouble providing enough juice to start properly. When a PC starts it draws quite a bit of power initially as everything spins and starts up.

If it's not that then try and be more descriptive about what happens when you start. i.e. Do the fans spin up? Does the motherboard light up where it should?

That sort of thing.

I had problems cold booting a few weeks ago after my system had been running fine for years, turned out the PSU was on the brink of dying as it failed a few weeks after it started having trouble.

Hi again, thanks for the replies. I'll have to wait until it does it again but from memory nothing fires up, no fans, no beeps etc, only the faint click from one of the hard drives, printer is networked, but there are usb hubs attached.
