Hi,

I'm getting the following I think (unless anyone has other suggestions) from OcUK on saturday.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB (£69.31)
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient 95W Edition" (£180.94)
Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R (Socket 775) (£82.24)
2x GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz (£93.98)

Sub Total : £362.95

VAT is being charged at 17.5% VAT : £65.08

Total : £436.98

I'm worried about is the power consumption of this beast. I currently have a dual core AMD and a 8800 GTS which runs fine on my 5 year old 500W power supply. The power supply is great it just goes on and on and the fan speed never changes on max load etc, so I know it's coping.

But i'm a bit worried about this dual core sucking the juice, do I need to add a power supply to the list. Also do I need the latest form factor power supply for this board?

I will be removing 3 of my 4 hard drives and adding the one 500GB which should also save some power and give me more space for my ever growing games/music/video collection.

I'm also a bit worried it's a bad time to upgrade (isn;t it always) but i've been holding on a long time.

I don't want to get this then find I can't install the PCIE 2.0 graphincs cards due soon or find that the 45nm chips and DDR3 is made mainstream soon and be left with an ageing rig within a few months!!

I really need a new graphics card at some point as the 8800 GTS 320MB is not going to cope in future games with a res of 1920 x 1200! I will be gutted if I spen loads of money and, oops, i'm not compatible with the 9800!

Any thoughts?

Cheers.

What are the rails on the PSU developing ? That is of more importance than the Watts figure......

It's a HEC Herolchi Electronic Co. Ltd ( HEC 425VR-PT )

+3.3 28A or 35A peak
+5V 33A or 37 peak
+12V 15A or 17A peak
-5V 1A or 1A
-12V 1A or 1A
+5 Vsb 2A or 2A

Total output 350W
Peak output 425W

Opps thought iwas was a 500W... obvously not.

But seriously not a hiccup at the moment on a overclocked dual core amd, 8800 gts, 4x HDD, CDROM etc. Must be good quality to still be going strong after 5+ years?

Anyway, do I need a new one?

Would a corsair 520W suffice?

My current psu has more on the +3.3 and +5 than the monern corsair suprisingly. But the corsair has more power on the +12 (18A)... and has three seperate lines each for 18A not just one line like my current psu.

Dam it's getting more expensive with the psu!! :( Oh well. :D

(EDIT)

Also does anyone know if the next generation of graphics card will work in this mobo. I will need to upgrade my graphics at some point but i'm worried all the future cards will be PCIE 2.0 and that it won't be compatible with my mobo. I don;t want to have to upgrade again just to fit a graphics card in a few months!!

That's only because modern psus focus more on the 12V+ rails, which are the main power source for most modern components.

Yes a corsair HX520 will do nicely.

As long as the mobo has PCI-E 1.1 standard it will work with PCI-E 2.0 cards. I'm pretty sure all P35 mobos have PCI-E 2.0 though.
