Hey all, i've been a pc gamer for years but now i've gone and bought a cheapo 360 off a mates uni friend.

So got it for a great price, it was a core but i've got a hd and 11games for it now. But its a 02/02/06 model and it sooo loud! even when its from the hd. But when the disk spins its like a jet. I work at sega and they're dev premiums are whisper quiet in comparison. Is this just because its so old?

Basically i can go to a local shop and they do trade ins for consoles etc. And i can exchange the current core for another one for £40. For this i should get a newer core (i can check out the manufacturer date from it) and 1 years warranty with the shop.

Just wondering if this is worth it and whether a newer core would be a bit quieter.

Cheers :)

I 'moved' from PC gaming to a 360 in March this year and was shocked by how loud the unit is, not only the disc drive, but the fans - it sounds like having a bunch of delta fans on full whack!

Not sure when my was made, but like I said, I bought it in March this year, so would assume it is a 'newer' model; but that said, it is loud.

Scort.

It's out of warranty so you may as well replace the fans and drive yourself.

The newer models are just as noisy and it's a lucky dip to get *** quiet ones.

Some 360's do infact have delta fans.

I would trade it for a new one, and get the benefit of a 1 year warranty :)

hmmm yeah but for £50 he could buy a 2year warranty. Tough one, my nephews brand new 360 is noiser than his old one. Like Kreeee said its lucky dip.

I don't think you can buy the 2 year warranty after the initial 1 year has elapsed can you?

Not to sure, maybe not. Then he should do the trade in as you suggested for £40 and have the warranty.

You are right you can not get an extended warranty from microsoft after the first year has expired.
I would trade it in and get a new console with a full years warranty then later on if you want to you can get the two year warranty.

How does one go about this? It's just I'm getting a 360 soon and definitely want to get that.

Why didn't you test it out before buying?

Sounds like you got had :(

aww :) i don't think so. My friend came over and he had a launch premium and i was like... its hella loud n he said that its as loud as his. Plus i got it for £130 with 7 quality-ish games. I think i've spent about £200 now and got 11 good games and a hd for it.

hmm..does it depend on the drive then? or just like everyone said lucky dip? no way to determine it?

Because if there is i can go down to the chain of shops and inspect them before buying/exchanging. I've put it at the top of a shelving unit on my desk! i wanna lock it away but then it'll over heat and fry!

A leaflet comes in the 360 box that you send off to microsoft.

The offer on said leaflet states that it expires 10 days after purchase though, I managed to get mine in jusr before this time.

Scort.

I hadnt used my 360 for 2 or 3 weeks till last night, after using my quiet pc, i truly forgot how horrendously noisy my 360 was when i switched it on, its getting punted next week till a quiet one comes out.

you can just call xbox support at any time within your first year and they'll sort it for you - at least thats what I did. HTH

Time limit doesnt matter I sent my first form back after 8 months and am just about to warranty my other 360 that is 5 months old using the slip. I phoned them up the first time to check. They said the 10 days was for the USA.

Are the quieter drives even in UK systems yet? I'm pretty sure it is the BenQ drives that are quiet but there was a bit of a debate whether they were actually in UK consoles (although admittedly that was a couple months ago so probably are by now).

Anyway, my first 360 from June'06 was quieter then my current one from Nov'06. At the moment I would try and get as new a model as possible, but don't go expecting it to be any quieter. Or, as already pointed out, you could probably buy a quieter drive and replace the drive in your 360.
