Hi everyone,
Two days ago, I spent the best part of two or three hours removing the busted rear Differential with a friend of mine. I wasn't expecting it to be all that heavy, but the thing weighs at least 15 or 20kg!
Well, I suppose it does have to take the engine power, and drive the rear wheels!
Anyway, heres a pic of the offending item, opened up:
The problem was the flange that connects to the propellor shaft.
The other two flanges that connect to the half shafts then the rear wheels was perfect. So if you look to the right of the picture, where the bracket is (it is hidden, but that's where the flange to the propellor shaft goes) it was basically broken, even though the unit itself is supposed to completely seal any oil that goes into it.
It wasn't that complex a task, but we couldn't get the exhaust and silencer box off the rest of the exhaust pipe, so we had to jack the back up with axle stands, and rest the exhaust and silencer on some bricks as you can see from the pic below:
Then we had to take off the two tyres, take the shock absorbers from their respective brackets, and undo about 12 stubborn nuts and bolts from the two half shaft flanges and the propellor shaft flange, whilst going into first gear, then neutral, repeatedly and then subsequently letting the hand brake off and on, repeatedly. Then it wouldn't come out so we realised the five leaf spring bolts had to be undone.
After that, a little fiddling and releasing a few more nuts and bolts made the thing drop out onto my hand. I was covered in so much oil, but it's off now.
It will be getting replaced in less than a week, perhaps sooner.
I have no idea how it first happened, but the overdrive also went. I am thinking this is due to the massive oil loss that ocurred when the rear differential blew up. I just hope it doesn't happen again and the overdrive and the gear box aren't seriously messed up after the rear differential went!
It doesn't seem to be starting up anymore (well, I tried before getting the rear differential off, would be very dangerous to try to start her up whilst resting on chocs and the axle stands!) but it does turn over and it did splutter last time, so I think it just ran out of fuel.
Front view of my pride and joy:
Should have used a smaller lens! But I will be getting some better pictures of her when she is running again
