usually chair floor protectors are
pvc or rubber
if you want aluminium or steel a square metre will cost more
try amazon and search for chequer plate/checker plate
I bought a polycarbonate carpet protector from a Mat Store recently and it seems fine. I paid a touch more than those you can find on the usual shopping place but by all accounts and reviews I saw it was the better choice. I just looked and they also do similar for hard floors.
They used to sell a polycarbonate one at costco for carpet floors but they wont work on wood floors as they have little spikes that sit in the pile of the carpet. You could just get a pack of laminate flooring and fit a few bits together till you get the correct size you need and then glue it together. It might slip about on the carpet though but should be ok with the weight of a chair/person on it.
I have one of the cheap PVC ones you can get from just about any DIY store and it works as advertised. Not a single mark on the wood flooring after 4 years.
