Quite a few cases have been made from wood and won prizes with mdpc. Only problem is they don't conduct heat very well and its heavy.

My metal case as sound deadening so doesn't conduct heat either. That's what I use fans and vents for.

If your building the case yourself you have no real reason to stick to convention at all.
All you need is an enclosure big enough to house all your parts with good ventilation.

Think a bit differantly and you could make something amazing I would dearly love the skills to be able to do this myself in particular as I am very much an advocate of the "living room" PC and if this is in a well designed wooden case all the better.
