Woohoo!

errr, don't cpu prices tend to fall over time? I suppose if you bought it in July it would have been cheaper???

Not in this case. The i7 920 should really cost £200+, but because it is going end-of-life and being replaced by the i7 930 then there are some amazing deals for the i7 920. Considering they overclock just as well as each other, going for the i7 920 now makes a lot of sense - even if its just going on a shelf for a few months. By the time July rolls around it is highly likely that there won't be any i7 920s left.

To the OP - Good luck, do you know what motherboard you will be going for when the time comes?

So in July when he gets to use it he will actually have an obsolete piece of kit?

I can see the logic in what you say and I guess it's down to preference, but I don't think it makes good sense to do that - you can always buy a second hand 920 or a new one from the bay in July for cheaper.

Eitherway, I don't want to spoil it for the OP, I know how exciting it is to get your hands on a new piece of kit that you've been planning for so long!!! Now OP, get going with that mobo so you can get it working ASAP!!!

I don't understand what you mean when you say "obsolete piece of kit", the Bloomfield series of i7 chips will still be top-end CPUs in July - and for that matter even at the end of the year. The i7 930 which is replacing the 920 is identical to it in every way - apart from a 5% higher multiplier. This 5% boost is only worthwhile if you are running the chip at stock speeds - when overclocking the 920 and 930 top out at the same point. Considering the 930 will take up the 920s old price point £200-220, then buying a new 920 for £168 makes a lot of sense.

Also remember, the X58 platform is withdrawn as the top-end platform by intel in Q3 2011.

As for buying a second hand 920 on the bay - well obviously he could do that and save money, but he wouldn't get any warranty (perhaps not crucial for these CPUs, but it does bring peace of mind).

Looking at the rampage 3 and the gigabite one (its about £250) dunno the name. Will be watercooling but ill need the stock cooler to test everything and i got the reference one for £160.

stock cooler never used one since i went to w/c a few years back just plug it in under water fitting the referance cooler and then the w/c just wastes building time
