Hi,

I love the taste of this in various stews, casseroles, pies and sauces etc. The problem is it contains anchovies and I have an irrational fear of any fish product. I cannot use it in cooking or eat food that has it in if I know it's in there.

I usually use hendersons relish, but this is very expensive to buy as i have never seen it locally. I usually have to buy from ebay and the postage costs more than the bottle of sauce.

Just wondering if there is anything similar I could try that is available on the shelves at supermarkets?

not sure how similar it tastes, but have you tried the vegetarian version ?

I didn't know they did one! Thanks, I'll give that a try next time I go shopping.

Get over the fear, nothing beats Worcestershire sauce!

Hendersons relish is as good i'd say. Sean Bean takes a few crates back to the US with him when he visits his family in Shefield apparently :D. I might even just get a litre of the stuff from their site for £13.

Have a look at Geo Watkins Mushroom Ketchup

I got this stuff once before as it was in a recipe for steak and ale pie. It was nice if I remember, but is it really a substitute for Worcestershire sauce? Or something you would add as well as it?

I'm going to try and hunt down some of this. I remember someone recommending it in a thread a while back and forgot all about it. Couldn't see it online at either Tesco or Asda, but they must have some in store. It says suitable for vegetarians, but I guess that doesn't mean it doesn't contain anchovies, so will have to check the bottle.

Thanks for the suggestions, i'll have a look for the vegetarian Worcestershire sauce and get another bottle of the Mushroom Ketchup.

Haha, I know it's really strange. I think I am mentally scarred by an experience when I was a kid. It was a very hot 30+ day and I opened a metal bin that was full of rotting fish. Nearly passed out from the smell and have never been able to eat fish since.

I almost stopped eating chips as they're sometimes fried in the same oil as battered fish.

I think it would be cheaper to just buy a litre of Hendersons Relish from their site for £13 than a good therapist :p. It's amazing stuff and I use it in all sorts. I can't believe its not popular nationwide either. Although I guess Worcestershire sauce is already well known and people aren't going to swap to something they haven't heard of before.
