Wordpress Configuration

For some reason, when i post something onto my blog, it shows the whole story on the main page, i only want it to show a summary of the post.

Any ideas how i do it?

From the Dashboard > Settings > Reading > For each article in a feed, show > Summary ?

Alternatively, to avoid having to use  tag

You can select excerpt under settings somewhere and then a selected amount of each post is put on the page I think, or you can make a select part to put on the post to show by inserting a subset of the post text in the excerpt part under the post entry bit (Scroll down when adding or editing a post)
