Firstly I am a very novice website design and am about as graphically talented as your left toe. With that in mind what do you think to this WordPress design I have done.

(sorry about the large image, but imageshack and just about every other thing I tried wouldn't work for some reason)

Also this aint a competitor, it does home PC repair, does not sell equipment.

Its very nice, if I was still running Nucleus/WP on my site I'd use it if it was published under the GNU/GPL.

My only gripe is the white around the selected item.

shhh you and fix my wireless network card :P

I know what you mean about the white, I don't like it either, but I couldn't find a colour that worked :( and white was the best of a bad bunch, if you know what I mean.

For me it lacks elegance. The header text bevel and nav text design are clumsy, and the computer image doesn't fit all too well.
Try and simplify it a bit using plain text for the nav with a pure-CSS hover state, and sort out the shape of the header into something more smooth.

Still, I've seen a lot worse, and some simple edits could go a long way.

I had the same fun with selecting pinks for my new site, ending up going with grey. :o

Thanks for the critique dude, btw I just checked your site and noticed it had a bad rating on SiteAdvisor, I would speak to McAfee about that and get them to change it as the results say they got "less" than 1 email a month.

Thoughts:
  • The search box is easy to miss and the green borders on the vertical edges don't really tie into the rest of the design. Not sure it needs to be that long either.
  • The transparency on the image of the desktop machine looks a bit odd. The perspective it's taken at, and the fact it sits above the header bar, suggests that the lines of the header bar should be be behind the image rather than visible through it.
  • The concept of a computer repair company having a blog is not something I'd expect. I'm not really sure of its purpose from a business perspective.
  • I echo the comments about the stroke around the menu text. It makes the text more difficult to read.

Tried to take in to account most of what you have said.

The reason(s) for the blog are these:

1) As a diary place to keep a log of some of the more unusual jobs I come up against
2) As a feeder for the main site. Blogs can very well on indexing from bots like google and msn, as they contain high volume of relevant content, with links to and from like minded sites. They then increase the traffic to your main site and increase your google rankings.

Also creating helpful user guides, hints and tips etc, increases the chances of other sites link to you and again driving traffic and search bots back to your main business page.
