WordPress for Non-Blogging Purposes?

Was just wondering if many people did this? If so, what for (content wise)?

I know WordPress is as 'blog-gy' as you can get but I've noticed a few websites that run an 'articles' section alongside their personal blogging - particularly an Xbox 360 one that was posted in the consoles section.

I have been pretty much set on Joomla! for my website and even went as far as buying a skin for it. However, Joomla! is only in RC2 at the moment with another RC to come and in addition to that, my skin may not be getting upgraded to fit the new version - so I'm in limbo at the moment. I don't really want to be running in Legacy mode in the new Joomla! either.

It has meant delaying the creation of the website even further than I would have liked and I could be looking at another few months before I pluck up the determination to have a proper go at it.

Anyway, I'll probably download WP and have a bit of a play around with it - see what the admin end is like along with plugins and see if it's suitable. But the original question still stands.

Thanks. :)

I don't have anything online at the moment that uses Wordpress. But you can definitely use it for more than just blogging. There's a lot of plugins out there for Wordpress so setting it up is pretty easy.

And it's definitely the easiest blogging system to theme. Check out...

I have recently created a website for my work, it is based on wordpress.

All I had to do is to change the template and take out the menu code from template, put in my own nav menu. Then I created some static pages and add page urls to menu based on its id number.

Have a look: www.handsthattalk.co.uk if thats what you're looking for.

Wordpress has a static frontpage feature if you don't want the posts to be visible in frontpage.

Could you post the link to xbox site you mentioned? Just curious to see it. :)

Sure thing. Didn't realize it was a member here but it's Kainz

As for the site, it's similar to what I want to do, thanks for posting it up.

Thanks for the link to that WP plug-in site - making a bookmark folder for it so I can pull together a good bit of info.

I also created a demo of a wordpress CMS, complete with dynamic menuing (when you write a page the menu gets updated), and also scope to put in external links into the nav bar.

You can find the demo here http://www.simplywordpresscms.com

The theme is standard to show you that it's WordPress.

Site-wide seach box is also a cool feature.

Haven't had time to finish all the writing all the conten for it .. but you get the idea.

I have just started putting together a site using Wordpress for a VoIP thing.

WP isn't bad as something other than a blog, but I expect there are better alternatives I could have used.

But its easy to use - however the site is still half done :s

I'm pretty close to just launching the site with WordPress - I like a good bit about it although a lot of the basics and options are missing from it. I hope that improves as time goes.

Anyway, two problems I'm having are relatively simple. I've asked on WordPress forums but no one seems to know and I'll take my chance there may be a WP expert or someone with half a clue who may be able to help me out.

I'm running the latest K2 and latest WordPress (2.3.1) - I want one of the page tabs entitled forum to take me to my forum (an external link)

- is there a plugin that will do this or will I have to edit the base code to simply change the location of the link?

If so, where do I start?

Secondly, I run a standard sidebar with a few bits and pieces in it. I would like a module that could house some simple links. The idea is to add and delete forum links into this module in a decent backend interface (not editing the base code as a few people who will be working on the site aren't technically minded).

I have seen a few widgets which allow text insertion as well as php coding (which is far beyond what I need) but they're widget based and "widgets" dont work in K2 as far as I know.

Thanks for any help. :)

seek, thanks very much for that. Works a treat.

I had looked at that plugin ages ago - but read an inaccurate description of what it actually does.

:) Just the other one to knock down now.

I use the plugin you mentioned above (which allows text+PHP) for that, as my theme supports widgets. So can't help you with that one. :(

Have you considered using a theme which does have widget support?

I haven't looked about for any themes to be honest, as K2 (for as overused as it is) does exactly what I want - although the lack of widget support and this last sticking point is quite annoying.
