Hey guys,

For my new domain I'm looking for a snazzy, preferably free photoblog of sorts which will allow me to:

1) Feed my twitter directly into it, so if I post on twitter it also posts on the website

2) Allow linkable galleries in a sidebar

3) Be fully compatible with mobile browsers...so no flash! :p

4) Display my images in quite a large format on a rotating gallery

Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm quite a dab-hand with these new fandangoed compootah thingies so if it takes some technical know-how to figure it out then I'm always up for a challenge :)

Thanks in advanced,
Jake

I personally don't have any experience with wordpress. But if you are willing to put in a bit of time you should be able to knock a site up from scratch over a period of a week or so, when you want to make any changes to your site (or possibly re-design) you'll know your site inside out so will be fairly simple for you to do so :)

I'll probably wait until someone else comes along with a slightly more sensible idea of actually using wordpress though :p

I've always been useless at building my own sites...but can hack an existing one to bits.

Does that make sense? :p

Haha most definitely, if you understand the code then it will be moderately easy. Hacking a site starts to get messy when you start losing track of various tags and don't understand what the various bits of CSS do!

You can make some very pretty slideshows etc with Jquery (search around on google for Jquery slideshows) and the twitter integration will be fairly simple just by using their API that they provide.

Nice, good to hear the twitter integration will be easy.

I found photograti after some gewgling last night, but I'd rather not pay...hmmm, shall have to do some proper digging at lunch time.

Stop being a cheap skate and get a decent/premium wordpress theme. It will save you time in the longrun and will likely function/look better anyway.

Someone wake up on the wrong side this morning? :p

If I get my arse in gear and do the research properly then it shouldn't cost me anything, there is SO much free content on the net there is no way I can't get what I want (which is pretty simple as far as website requirements go) for free :)

But anyway, that's for another conversation. :)

I am of the same opinion, I don't mind spending hundreds for a good website with high functionality, but for my needs I only need something very basic (really just a few galleries and a menu bar to navigate between categories).

I intend to use a free wordpress site to begin with so I can understand both the technical side of what goes into it but also design issues that I want developed in my personal site. Like you I don't want to work from the ground up but given a basic website I can modify it all completely.

There are also some relatively cheap wordpress sites that look great for $10-$15 that are good to begin with.

A lot of the more expensive options just don't impress me much at all and I see better work for free/cheap.

$200 is a lot of money considering I am aiming for something simple :)

Still, the suggestion is appreciated all the same :)

Mmmm now this is more like it :) I would pay $9!!!

Liking this a lot. I need to see what it would be like to integrate my twitter feed into it before making the decision however. IE if I tweet will it just pull it through automatically...and if people subscribe can I set it so they don't get all the crap I tweet and just actual Blog posts etc? :)

Will fire off an email to the support guys of the site and see what they say. They may be able to cater for me specifically if I pay some coin :)

The simplicity comes with the ease and scale of customisation, continual automatic updates to ensure compatibility with new features from later wordpress builds. X amount of pluggins under one theme to help avoid plugin conflicts. You get what you pay for.

Everyone has different opinions, but for me personally if the site is to be used to generate business then this is one area I wouldn't skimp on. It's akin to a bride using uncle bob due to his big camera. There is soo many people with big camera's out there, why pay for one.

Buy cheap, buy twice.

Agreed, however...this isn't for generating business. I'm slowly moving away from that side of things of photography and switching to purely enjoyment and 'phologging/photoblogging' :)
