I'm trying to get my head around using wordpress, to design a web page for a tool hire company i'm setting up. I would like a few good template ideas, what ones are a good starting point for me to work from.

The default twenty eleven theme is a good place to start.

Avoid the "free templates" from random websites. They're often stuffed full of malicious code!
