will be setting up a blog soon for very first time and just been looking around. i already know of most common blog software but just wondering if perhaps there is a new latest and greatest blog software that has only been released and isn't very common yet that perhaps i should look into before installing one?

started using wordpress the other week for the first time and for someone like me who is a noob at this sort of stuff i found it great to use

i love what some people have done with there sites making the own temples which is beyond me

Depends what you class best as.

I would guess its the most popular, has the most people developing plugins and themes etc. If that makes it the best who knows.

Saying that, I use it all the time as its easy and quick!

I like cute news, though it is very simple. It doesn't do everything for you like wordpress + plugins seems to do, though it's very nice for implementing into an already existing website.

Wordpress is probably still the best, I used to use nucleus, but it's just not updates as much.

thanks guys for all the replies. went with wordpress in the end as there is many plugins for it which i'll hopefully find useful.

any suggestions for plugins that a book reader/author would find usefu plus any really standard ones that no blog should be withoutl? e.g. currently reading, reduce spam ones etc.

thanks again

Akismet and wordpress.com stats to start with. You need a wordpress account to use them both, but that's free to set up.

What plugins you use is entirely up to what you want on the site I guess.

One of favorites I've got installed are Random posts which just lets me display some old posts in a widget on the sidebar. I just found it's nice to be refreshed about old content that usually just gets forgotten.

"Bad Behaviour" - another anti-spam bot. In conjunction with askimet, I haven't had one spambot comment so far even without captua security.

Btw WP devs are always updating their software. In the last 3 months the admin dashboard has changed twice (for the better each time) :)

spam-stopper is a must as once them bots find you they just don't stop, it just adds a simple question into the comments field

wordpress 2.7 has just been released, the Dashboard is a major step forward in design. I've not found anything else I like, that's as nice to use.

i'd say wordpress, but personally I run a few sites on cmsms with the blog made simple module. I can use ANY design quite easily, but it can hit the database server hard. Am gonna look at wordpress this year (2009) for a few sites people want up and running shortly...
