I decided against developing my own webpage (I have some idea to integrate my nature work with google earth plugin, that will have to wait) and just using a Wordpress site.

But I can't find a theme that I like, they all seem to have limitations.

  • I want a clean, simple, elegant design, probably white background but preferably customizable.
  • I want it to be resizable so when viewing n a higher resolution screen (i use a 27" imac at work) you don't get a tiny box in the middle and wasted space).
  • I want most correct functioning on iPads and such like, so many Wordpress themes end up useless.
  • I want the main menu to be at the top but with an option for a side menu, or better still to customize where the menu is. Menus at The top are easier to navigate/understand but given the aspect ratio of 3:2 photos viewed on 16:9 screens side menus can make a lot of sense.
  • menu option need to have drop down menu lists so the main menu bar can be kept minimal and less button click are needed to navigate.
  • the gallery needs to allow clicking through to the next an previous photo, an option to enlarge to FS and have a listener for clicking on it so I can forward to a new page or bring up an info box/caption.
  • should be very compliant with w3c regs, Designed well for SEO etc.

The gallery functionality should be similar to this:

This theme is pretty close and is free, but apparently is not well coded and I can't find where to download it.

At this stage I am kind of thinking I will have to make my own theme, but might try a free theme so I can understand what wordpress is all about and come up with my own design.

I use this one, it probably doesn't do everything you want, but you can probably add additional plugins for the extra features.

That seems to be quite competent but I don't like any of the free themes.

What I don't know about word press is how easy it is to customize the word-press theme and also what legal issues there are if you take a commercial theme and modify for your own use.

It's really easy to customise, and you can do as much customisation as you like (it's basically one of their motos).

As Raymond said, it's not cheap, but it's worth it if your serious. It's like the lightroom equivelant of blogs.

I will have a deeper look.
I do only need a simple theme though so I might be able to find/modify/create my own theme and tailor it to my liking with much less cost.

I am also not afraid to do some simple development myself.
prophoto loos like it will mainly just save time at the expense of $200.
