A couple of weeks ago I decided to see what this Wordpress thing was all about. I got myself some hosting and after many hours, managed to install Wordpress.

I have chosen a Theme activated akismet and Google XML sitemap plugins and everything is running fine and I was quite proud of what I achieved :D

Now I see they have a new version  do I really need to update to this at the moment, would I be better waiting to see if anyone has problems with it and fixes found?? if I dont update will that cause problems for me??

If I do need to update how do I Backup my SQL -I am with 1and1- Or can I just copy the whole wordpress directory to my desktop??

Another thing I was wondering is, when I add a post where does that get saved, also what info is saved in mySql??

sorry if these question are really stupid this is the first time I have used hosting and wordpress

Regards

I think you auto update from the dashboard like plugins.

EDIT yer you can, just clkick the link that the dashboard gives you.

You can update from the dashboard. If it's being difficult temporarily set everything to 777 through FTP and then set proper permissions again once its finished.

This is mainly a security update and thus I would advise it. The item its fixing is more of an annoyance than a critical issue though IIRC.

Well I had a go at updating using Dashboard. All it does is tell me it is downloading Zip file and then nothing?

Had a look on my server and a file has been put in /wp-content  but no change.

I have aslo managed to make a back up of MySql database and saved that on my desktop. Now am I correct in thinking that if I had to start all over for some reason, I can just upload this file and my site would be back all as it is now with posts, comments and theme?
