I have been asked to attend a work based scenario test for a job that i applied for. The job is for a 2nd line support officer (helpdesk) at the couincil.

What can i expect as i have never attended a test as such before and have never worked on a help desk (current job all support is provided face to face)?

The test should last one hour.

maybe given a faulty desktop and told to fix it, leads, mem mods ect loose, cables loose and that type of thing.

name printer types

where are drivers kept

how to make a AD user

simple faults as in how to unlock a user, how to set up a mail account, how to set up a network printer...

i guess its just a show us you can do it instead of a write down the answer.

Good luck.

You'll probably do some mock calls or something like that. I worked in a callcentre (for a week) when I was a student, and the first 2 days were roleplaying calls. We basically spent the time phoning up the hot girls who worked there :)

it will be practical, just some mock tests relating to log-ins, email, general system support. stuff like that - you can't really study for it i'm afraid, you'll either know it or you won't :)

If it's for a council position you will need to demonstrate your inabilty to be efficient, to be able to tie everything up in loads of paperwork and procedure and then jack it in with half the job done and blame someone else :p

Tell me about it. I work in a school at the moment and most of our IT support is provided by the county council.

Mock calls.

If your going for a job on a helpdesk and they want to test you, it will be mock calls. They will also be non technical as they cannot assume you know the systems. The will be things like a stressy caller, or someone who doesnt know what there doing, to see how you handle it.

Helpdesk is the worst job in the world! Go 3rd level support, then you can order the minions to take the calls while you build the systems :)
