Hey all, bit of background.....

Returned about a month ago from travelling. Been looking for permanent work ever since getting back.
I've been temping with agencies for a couple of week, getting between £6.50-£7 in and around the area I live which is decent enough.

I went for an interview at a company yesterday for a job. They have 2 positions available. Before the interview the lady in HR mentioned that there could be scope to start as a temp worker immediately for £7 per hour and would put me in an advantageous position for getting a perm job.

Anyway I went to the interview which I thought went pretty well. Next day (today) I get an email from HR saying that unfortunately they placed someone with a bit more experience and skills in the permanent role but because I had a positive interview the team leader would like me to start as a temporary worker immediately on Monday.

Now i'm in a bit of a dilemma, the journey is about 35 miles round trip whereas at the moment i'm doing around 10 miles round for the same money, £7 p/h.
They said they haven't placed anyone in the second role and that this temporary role in no way guarantee's a permanent position at the end.

Now am I right in thinking that I could just be being used to fill in until the perm guy starts?

Or should I treat this a pre-screening to see if i'm up for the job. I really don't like the idea of the extra driving with no concrete prospect of a perm job at the end of it (all for the same money as what I can get locally)

Part of me thinks if i'm good enough to work for you as a temp then why can I not be offered the other perm role?

The job is an IT analyst/support role with what seems a large, good company with decent prospects.

I kinda get the feeling that I'm just going to go in as a temp and then get the old 'you're good enough for the job, but sorry we don't have anything available anymore'

Am i being rational? Do companies do this? Or could is it a genuine way of vetting me and proving myself to the team leader and i'm thinking too much into it and every liklihood is that if im not complete nerbert at the end i'll get offered the other perm job?

I've you're confident in your ability, I would go for it. Mainly because there is a possibility of perm, but where you are now there is no possibility at all. You dig? You can always be looking for a perm position as well as working at the new place hustling.

That is true, i'm just temping doing admin/clerical/typing jobs at the moment so yeh not something I'd want to do permanent anyway.

I am confident in my ability it sounds pretty similar to what I did at the NHS and I picked up all their systems pretty damn quickly, and became the top of my team in no time at all.

It's just the extra driving etc which is making me be umm and arrr about it and the associated costs as the money will be the same as what i'm earning at the moment.

If I get there and discover that they have filled both of the perm jobs available would I be unreasonable in thinking that I more than likely wont be getting a permanent job out of it?

Potentially not, but you'd be much more employable for a position in support if you are currently temping up support (provided that's what you would like to do?) Whereas currently trying to get a job in support and temping at clerical/ admin work is likely to be much harder.

Also true haha, I think i'll take it and just pray I get given a permanent job out of it!
