Ok, so it turns out that I'm going to be having a work experience student with me for a couple of days in July and I'm wondering what I could give them to do (and there's only so many cups of tea I can drink in a day :D).

Any of you developers here ever had students sit with you and if so, what sort of things do you do with them?

I'm assuming that the student will know very little, if anything about programming/databases/SQL, so I couldn't just give them something to do.

I suspect I'm going to have to come up with a small project that I can go through with them or something.

Suggestions welcome ;)

Might help if you explain a little but about what your job is and what you normally do in a day.

We normally get them to do research on our competitors websites, or competitors websites of our clients. Reporting on the UI, design, features etc.

Web development projects using .NET, SQL Server, plus all the page design etc etc.
Maybe building some e-Learning courses if I'm really lucky ;)

My day generally involves periods of sitting, thinking, sporadic bursts of programming followed by more thinking - none of which I would have thought would necessarily interest a 15 year old, even if they are interested in computers :)

I had my niece (also 15 at the time) sit in with me for a day (on orders of her mum). I spent pretty much the entire time on the phone with clients - she looked bored as hell.

Don't bother asking a 15 year old to program anything. Dreamweaver + some tutorials is my suggestion.

yea, tutorials are probably the best...
See what they know 1st, if they know little bits of photoshop and other design prohrams, you could get them to do some basic (boring) stuff that you dont wanna do.
Its WORK experience at the end of the day, who said it had to be fun? I know mine was pretty boring, but at least my products i made got used!
