So who here keeps a log book for work?

I'm starting to think that I should be keeping one, all I have at the moment is my memory (poor) and hundreds of bits of paper with list on them (easy to lose, forget etc).

A number of times recently people have mentioned log books, so it got me thinking that maybe I should start keeping one.

I was wondering what people experiences of them are. What do you put in, what do you leave out? How often do you fill them in? On paper, on the computer, black board? Just general info really.

Cheers,

Ps i'm off to write this up in my log book.....

I've no need really.. due to the nature of my job I have an e-mail log of all important discussions, my 'ARCHIVED' folder currently has 30190 e-mails in it. The search feature of thunderbird is surprisingly nippy..

For the most part anything important is on email / tasks / calander etc... I do find it very useful if I am particularly busy to spend 5 mins planning my day in the morning.. this then gets updated as the day goes along

I'll add, that I actually do like writing stuff down that I want 'imprinted' in my head.

That and I just love lists.. bit weird.

As someone trained as a scientist, I used to keep a log book at work. Even after moving away from R&D I kept doing it as I found it very useful. These days I use a micro-Wiki on my PC instead as it makes searching and organisation easier.

I keep a day book, which I guess is the same thing, to write important details down. At the end of the day I write everything up into an electronic day book to make things easier to search through etc.

i have to keep a logbook/time sheet (just to prove i do work)
im currently using some of the handy utilitys on my igoogle home page
just quick notes like

9th oct - fixed soandsos printer - 20 minutes

then at the end of the month ill paste it all into a word document.

does what i need!

Nah. Everything I do is pretty well documented and kept track of in a CVS, so no real need. I have notes and stuff for things I'm working on..

Nice one cheers. I think we have had the whole range from nothing at all, to lots of things.

I think I might just try and formalise my numerous list to begin with, maybe get them on my computer and off my oh so list covered desk!

Cheers

Don't have a log bog as such, my work is organised by:

*To do list, when someone wanders over and barks off things they want me to do
*Notebook, for anything i need to write down/diagrams/meetings etc
*Emails, record of work requested if i can get em to send em

Im an engineering designer, very important to keep information noted down as you cant keep it all i nyour head, and it needs to be somewhere until you can process it, if i see anyone in a meeting without a notebook, tells me they're not much use at anything.

I once kept a log in a book, but they chucked me out of the library. Now I keep a timesheet with hours worked on different projects day by day and never delete any emails.

Dito, although I still am quite badly organised. It all gets done though! :p
