Do you often feel like your life is dominated by your job? Personally, at the moment, I feel I have a pretty good balance.

I have a steady 10-6 job, the pay isn't great but its pretty relaxed. I occasionally do out of hours work for extra money which all at the moment seems to be going on holidays and festivals :)

Mornings I spend an hour at the gym, evenings I either have been covering out of hours or bouldering (rock climbing) - first outdoor session in the peaks in July

I may have the opportunity to take a different role - more pay, more responsibilities. I dont want to lose my low stress ways but at the same time would like to progress, build my skills and work with a highly technical team

I feel as if the new position will require me to 'not turn off' when it gets to the end of the day.

Anyone else feel like they cannot turn off when finishing work?

I don't do overtime for the one reason i like my life balance to be around 1/3 work on weekdays. 8 hours work leaves me 16 hours to myself to sleep or do as i wish with.

I turn off an hour before i leave so i don't have an issue on turning off im ready to run out the gate by dinner time but i know i can't.
U only have one life and ur leisure time is the bit u shall remember so make the most of it really

There's no point in remembering leisure time that is crap though because you have no money. I remember when I was on the dole for a bit and friends were going out for food, drinks etc. and I didn't have enough money to do the same

I suppose it come down to what you get used to. Someone who works on a factory line may have great leisure time at their local having a pint every night. Whereas I may think that is crap. However someone that earns 100k that uses their leisure time to sail boats may think my idea of festivals and holidays is rubbish (poor examples but you get what I mean)

KaHn - I wouldn't say I love my job but certainly dont dislike it. After a week off I miss it and the people that work there. - Usually find myself tinkering with stuff I would be doing at work anyway

been working overtime consistently over the past 6 months and looks to be continuing for the foreseeable future. Taking a third extra on top of my wages does help ease the pain though. Enjoy my work but at times (during the footy season) I do get stressed out as I do the photos, occasional video highlights and run the majority of the supporters club stuff on top of my work it means i don't have a day off to relax.

I don't have the opportunity to work overtime and I wouldn't if I could.
And if my boss caught me working late she'd be really annoyed.

Unless I have things planned I get bored after a day or two. I can't sit in the flat for more than a weekend.

Fortunately I can take holidays whenever I want really.

Absolutely. To much work especially weekends. 11hrs sat night, 12hrs Monday, 11hrs Tuesday and wednesday, another 12hr shift today. So yeah haven't got the balance yet.

I just want £2200 take home, with a Monday to Friday day job. No over time needed, be nice if I could do occasional overtime, if Holliday or something is coming up, all basic.
One day, one day soon hopefully. I'm within striking distance, got the training I need to move to a majority office based job, just need to find the job and the pay rise should be within that target zone.

Being a stay at home dad for the next 6 months means that I do literally nothing other than drink beer, play videogames and post on forums whilst neglecting the care of my child. I can't wait till she's old enough to get out there and earn her own money or go on the dole, thereby improving my work/play balance even further. She's just selfish, I suppose.

Mentally, the difference between working 9-8pm to 9-9pm is enourmous, even though it's one hour. Beyond the 10 hour mark, those extra hours mean the difference between doing one nice thing and the evening or nothing. Work and sleep, that is all.

There is a lot to be said for free time, you just burn out otherwise.

I work crazy hours but only because I can earn enough moolah to fund my hobbies. Further down the line it'll all pay off, as long as I don't croak before I'm 50.

Depends on the job, whether or not you enjoy it and whether or not you enjoy who you work with.

I never turn my work phone off, so I'm always on email. I'm also religiously in the office by 7am, regardless of how heavy a night I had before and usually don't leave until 6pm unless there's not much going on. I work for a few hours on Sundays, usually 11-3 to catch up on admin and paperwork, but I also massively enjoy the company of my co-workers. I think I work pretty damn hard relative to how I'm compensated, but if the social experience of work sucked I certainly wouldn't still be there.

Don't do it.

You never see on peoples tombstones "I wish I spent more time at work".

Haha - same. I retired last July and I'm now a full time house husband, responsible for the housework (which I did half of anyway), cooking (which I did anyway) and school runs. It's great - bike rides, drives out in the Westfield, couple of hours on Planetside 2 in the afternoons, catching up on a lot of books I've wanted to read (but don't tell the wife, she thinks it's really hard work!).

all work no play makes jack a sad boy...

tbh, my view is that a job is a means to get the money to enjoy and live, enjoying the job is important but just because its fun doesnt mean you should be a workaholic. whats that phrase "work to live, don't live to work"

8:00 - 16:30
Earning above the national average
Have time to post on here

Seems good to me!

Sometimes I genuinely think I'm overpaid for what I do. But then a lot of people I work with tell me I'm some sort of supergeek. When the **** hits the fan I can usually nail things down quickly.

But... geek... Not compared to some people I've worked with in the past, I'm not!

When you get to the point that you're consistently the most qualified person in the room then it's time to find a new challenge anyway.

I work from about 9:15 to 5:45 with an hour out for lunch. Actual work achieved varies, some days it's pretty intense and might involve working later which gets paid as OT. Other days I will do nothing all day. I'm not a huge fan of the ~1hr travel time door-to-door but I can always move.
