Can't mention names but one of our big competitors went bust a few days ago. Had a phonecall from the boss saying they have put a bid in with a plan to save UK jobs

Now the other company is much much bigger so i if they do win i can't see them keeping our IT Department.

Not sure what to think at the moment :( Sitting in NC and its too late to ring home so though i would post here.

Depends how they merge operations really. If your IT dpeartment moves into the others' location before any axing takes place, shouldnt be too bad. Also if your boss is ohining you on something like this, I'd have thought you wouldn't be very high up on that list unless the other IT department literally has perfect staff.

not sure how it would work, we run different systems and totally different manufacturing techniques.

But then again i would assume they need to integrate pretty quick as we are losing a shedload of money and reserves won't last forever

Waterford Wedgwood has been in trouble for a good while, given the current climate, I'd be worried certainly.

Knowing who you work for, I can see your concern, the Pottery industry is not best placed to ride out this storm.

Imo you'd be daft not to worry.

That said, there's not a great deal you can do about it.

Enjoy the biscuits & porn. ;)

The key word here is "synergies" (I hate this word). Basically, there will be job losses in one or both IT Department if the merger goes ahead.

My advice would be to try not to let it worry you as this really is outside of your control and whatever you do is unlikely to make a difference to your ultimate fate. Business is business and most of the time you are just a number (sweeping statement I know, but IMHO it is true for most medium to large organisations).

My advice would be to get your CV up-to-date and start networking. Get in touch with anyone in the industry you know and start to develop/re-develop relationships. That way if you lose your job in, say, 3 months time you'll be able to approach these people for possible opportunities for work.
