Hi guys,

I think I'm being taxed too much, I won't go into numbers etc, I'll just say there is a lot more coming off than should be. So I was wondering - what is the process to get this checked, and maybe even reclaim it? Or when?

I'm a tax novice.

Yes you can claim it back. It happens a lot when people start a new job and get put on the basic rate and never transferred to the proper tax code. Anyway write them a letter stating your case and they should send you a cheque.
I had a rather nice £800 refund a couple of years ago :D

If you are an employee on PAYE:

* If I have to pay additional tax on emergency code, when will I get it back?
Your employer will normally pay it back to you on the next pay day after you get your proper code. If the tax year ends before you get your proper code, the Tax Office will send you the repayment.

So I don't have to do anything myself, it will sort itself out?

Assuming it is an emergency code, I need to find out D:

That’s the theory but a number of times they have ‘forgotten’. keep an eye on you payslip and give your payroll dep or the tax office a ring they will be able to tell you.

I made tax claim through a form in one of the union's magazines for the time whilst i was working and still at college. They said i wasn't entitled to a tax claim and that i owed the £385 in NI if i want that year to be covered as part of the 30 years you need for the state pension. Plus it took like 2 months to come to that decision meanwhile they asked stupid questions like where was i working in 2002-2004 and if i wasn't working what was i claiming, when i was 14 years old and still in school.

I'm a payroll manager (well, apparently) - email in trust if you have any questions, more than happy to help

Tell me the numbers and your tax code and I'll tell you if you're paying too much. E-mail in trust.

I'm a tax adviser for a large firm of accountants.
