Afternoon people just wondering what your thoughts are on the below situation.

Ok, so I work in a call centre as a software support analyst which is open 365 days a year.

As a good will gesture on Christmas eve, everyone in the company got to leave half a day earlier than they normally would, bar people who work in our department who have to answer the phones etc helping customers.

Last year every one in our department basically kicked off saying it was unfair that some people got to go home early and us in support didnt and we all got our time back later on.

The same happened this year except we were all entitled to the time back as was scheduled by management except for people who were already off on in leu or had booked the day off already as holiday.

Now correct me if I'm wrong but people who were off like myself should in fairness be entitled to this time back as the people who did work that day still get to use their holiday entitlement when they want and also get this half a day off on top.

I spoke my line manager and she has been told its only people who worked who were entitled but she is going to follow this up when hour Director comes back from holiday.

So guys, am i right in thinking this or not...

Thanks

I'd be looking for half a days annual leave back, obviously you'd get nothing back if you were off ill or because of the weather. I wouldn't push it though, it is only 4 hours or so..

In my office some people work part time, like 3 days a week.

Everyone who was due to be in on Christmas Eve was allowed the day off. But what about the people who never work Fridays anyway? OH NOES! None of them kicked up a fuss.

I doubt any good will come of your making a fuss over this.

My place is the same as yours - if you were in and other departments went early but you had to stay we would as a thankyou give you 4hours to "bank" as it were.

If you had the day off already or were on holiday then you would not be entitled to it... as you didn't work it!

Yeah that's what i mean annual leave.

Im only asking on behalf of us who had legitimately booked the day off as holiday or had the day off due to working the previous weekend.

If it was known in advance you should only have had to book a half day off, in our office it's unofficial that we get to go home early so those who have booked it off have to take a whole days leave for it. If it's official then you should be able to get a half day back but I would imagine you'll be lucky

same here, i made the mistake of booking the whole day off before finding out :(

True, it wasnt known in advance, oh well I don't mind if I loose out, just thought it was worth asking, who knows i might get lucky.

Way to go. Next year everyone will work their contracted hours instead of getting a quick getaway. Suck it up or transfer to a different department, kicking off will just ruin it for everyone. I do sympathise but from a management point of view it would be easier and much less hassle to force everyone to work till the end of their shift rather than let those none-essential staff leave early. The blame will of course be passed to those who complained 'last year'. A bum deal for you for sure but what do you think you will gain from this?

I very much doubt ive 'ruined' it for everyone, its a simple question im not going to kick off if i don't get it back just thought its worth asking.

and im trying to gain an extra half day off in case i didnt make it obvious in the OP

But you didnt work so you are not "entitled" to that extra half day back. If you had only booked a half day would you have gone in and worked the second half, no, so why should you get the time off that people who did actually work it get.

Check your contract. You aren't entitled to anything probably as it is "good will". If they are planning on adding it on to your annual leave then you can take it at another time. I suggest Xmas Eve 2011 ;)

I remember the days of working in support and I really don't miss it. Same situation as you, treated quite unfairly compared to the rest of the entire company. We referred to it as being "ball bagged" as at every opportunity line managers or senior managers would be tea bagging the department or individuals within the department.
