I'm getting married in the summer and my Dad has offered to pay for a family holiday (nearest we will get to a honeymoon with 3 kids) to a luxury hotel in Tenerife.

Anyway, I started working at a sixth form college last October and notified them that I will be getting married in the summer hols and then I have my honeymoon in October half-term. Unfortunately I didn't realise that my fiancés half-term (she's a teacher too) as well as my 3 kids falls a week before mine! I notified my new employer of my mistake and asked for a week unpaid leave and they have refused.

I doubt I have any recourse but I'm wondering if there is anything I can do?

It's seriously peed me off as now it means I can't have a honeymoon and the reason they gave for refusing is pretty lame!!! It's actually made me consider looking for another job :(

I'm willing to bet you won't find many educational places that will give a week off in term time unless it's actual life and death.

Yes but if I move elsewhere then they usually honour holidays already booked. Plus I'm teaching IT so there's a lot of demand for my skills.

*cough*sick leave due to stress*cough*

lol

here is a question...Do teachers get paid leave they can take whenever or do they just have to take them within school holidays?

They just have to take them during school holidays. I can't think of an illness which would take me out for a week and has the side effect of a suntan :D
