Xmas eve was originally a working day but our company decided before that this year we could have it off (the whole company)

Not needing much cover a few of us (4) said we would cover and we were told would get double pay (then later also a day in lieu)

We filled in overtime sheets and ticked the box saying it was public holiday but we are now getting told that its not actual public holiday so wont be getting sod all - This decision went to HR and for them to agree to the pay had to be signed off by our head of department, who is not signing it off

I think whats happened is people in other areas of the business have had to work with no extra pay and have caught wind of us getting public holiday pay

Where do I stand, can I do nothing? Its generally a good company, good expenses, breaks etc but this just feels like that have take a dump on me, especially as I could have been at home with family on xmas eve - instead of working and not getting anything

Well if i'm reading this correctly, they can't pay you nothing, they just wouldn't be paying you extra. And also, ask your union rep.

Millions worked Xmas eve on standard rate pay, including myself. HR are right, it's not a public holiday. You chose to work so stop bleating about it and suck it up on standard rate like the rest of us.

He chose to work for double pay, what others get paid for Christmas eve is irrelevant.

I'd just ask for the day in the leiu given that you've worked a day you could technically have been off, and be happy with that.

If you've got anything in writing saying that they would pay you extra, then produce this, if not I imagine that you are SOL.

That's fair enough, but we were send an email saying these days would be holidays and was then told we would get double pay for working.

Everyone else took the day off, but I though the money would be useful in Jan when I am on holiday so will work instead of spending time with family

he only chose to work because of the extra pay he was promised though

making your post nothing more than a bitter rant

Pretty much this.

It is a normal day, most people worked. Most people don't ever have the opertunity for overpay, even if they work 60hours seek every week.

I'm in a similar boat..
Company decided holiday period was from 5.30pm Friday 21st December to 8.30am Wednesday 2nd January.
That is, the whole company was closed until Wednesday this week.
Looked at my online account when I got home and I've been paid for four days, not five this week!!

At least you you're not going to get sod all, what are you getting tho?

I also agree with Andy above, it'd be different if they hadn't told him he was getting paid extra for it. Stick it to the OP!!!!

*instead we will be getting sod all* (money anyway)

im going to do some digging for emails and see if I can find the ones saying we can have the day off and if it says anything about holiday

They won't pay you nothing for working. At the very least you'll get a normal days pay or a day in lieu. If you have proof that they said you would get double time and a day in lieu then present this evidence to HR. You should get this as these were the terms you agreed to work on, by all rights you could simply have had the day off.

You're not going to get much done about it moaning on here. Just present your evidence to HR on Monday and they'll do what they can for you. Speak to your boss and ask him why he's being a stingy little **** too.

Here is the exact email...

In light of this we will be looking to offer support on xmas eve as we do on a bank holiday (8-3 at double time).

Subject: Christmas and New Year opening hours

With the festive season rapidly approaching I wanted to let you know as soon as possible what the UK business operating hours will be this year. As many of you will be aware, the UK offices will be closed on the following bank holidays over the Christmas and New Year period:

• Christmas Day, Tuesday 25th December 2012
• Boxing Day, Wednesday 26th December 2012
• New Years' Day, Tuesday 1st January 2013

In addition to the above I am also now delighted to confirm that everyone working in the UK will be entitled to an additional one and a half extra days' holiday; details as follows:

• Christmas Eve, Monday 24th December 2012, the UK offices will be closed
• New Years' Eve, Monday 31st December 2012, the UK offices will close early at 1.00 p.m.

Please note that you are not required to book this extra time as part of your contractual holiday entitlement. However, if you wish take the morning of the 31st December 2012 as holiday, you will be required to book a half day's holiday via the firm's normal holiday booking process. Normal operating hours will exist at all other times. You will understand that, as we are closing all day Christmas Eve, we will not be closing early on Friday 21 December too.

The ****** team and ****** would like to thank you all for your efforts this year and wish you a refreshing and well deserved break over the holiday period. We hope that our arrangements for the Christmas and New Year holiday will ensure that you can all enjoy the festive season to the full with family and friends.

Best wishes
