Is it against the law for companies to make you work a month in hand?

Just totally curious about this...:)

Cheers

Eh? Do you mean being paid a month in arrears - i.e. you work a month and get paid at the end?

If so, it's how most companies operate, in my experience anyway :p

Sorry for being vague... I mean, can they make you work a month, not get paid, work the 2nd month and THEN get paid?

Cheers

Depending on your contract, yes, provided this was agreed to.

If they were contracted to pay you after the first month, then no.

If they use the setup to try and weasel out of paying for work done (eg leave and get nothing), no.

The situation is not unheard of, especially in larger companies with strict payroll dates...

Working a month in hand sucks, but on the flipside you get a whole month for free when you finish*

I ended up working 6 weeks payless when I first joined my current company, because I joined too soon after the payroll date. It did mean I got a bigger lump of money 6 weeks in :)
