Working away from home

I would suggest the issue is with the time away, not the allowances? Typically you'll get travel, accommodation and subsistence covered - at least that's what I get.

If you're unhappy with the time spent away from home, see what is in your contract relating to working away.

I do, it's standard in the Oil & Gas industry, it's called country uplift and it's an extra dayrate ontop of all your hotel / travel and food expenses.

Same industry, same benefits; one band for the UK and a second for abroad, and expenses claimed back with reciepts. Although the expenses have some guidelines on what is acceptable (boob bar; no, standard dinner out; yes).

Those who actually go offshore are on a substantially larger day rate but that is to be expected, for the inconvenience and to remain competitive with other employers. They can be away for weeks doing no more than 12 hours a day.

I spent a month abroad doing double my normal working hours. Got all my expenses back, salary, daily allowance and overtime so i couldn't complain, but as you say, a mrs and kids make it a lot harder and less attractive for large amounts of time away with little in the way of compensation.

To be honest the paltry daily extra doesn't do a lot for me, if i need the money i will do the overtime whilst away (a lot of it is witnessing/managing fabrication/NDT/Machining over weekends on time critical stuff). Our management are pretty good and if they ask you to go away for a bit it's because you are needed, not because they can't cancel their sunday golf game with the jones'.

Part of the job description for me, though I don't mind it. All travel, accomodation and expenses are covered. If "expenses" also include spending an evening drinking expensive whiskey in the hotel lobby, so be it. :D

I used to get full expenses as a perm....no hard limits (common sense) but no salary uplift - travel was claimable too at 1.5x.

Now as a contractor I make sure the rate reflects the location and time away from home.

I work for a well known retailer... They pay for travel and hotel plus 5, 10, and 30 for breakfast, lunch and dinner. That is for london though. Not too bad but we would never get anything extra for traveling!

The OP is clearly doing it wrong! You should find some guys also working away from home. This is your second bachelorhood calling! You should get the cheapest meal possible and then pool your expenses together and head out on the lash.

Some of the best nights out were with some 30-40+ year old project managers, delivery directors & UK board members. Those guys were animals after 4 beers :D Don't forget the obligatory call at 11pm to the wife back home with the kids.

Technically I get paid more, practically I'm not out of pocket.

I get mileage, hotel and food costs covered. That means I'm not spending money getting to work at home, and not paying food or bills.

Reality is, it's not as easy as that to measure, I don't know what your contract says, but mine basically states 'suck it up'.

We get £70 allowance for hotel, £17 for evening meal, £7.50 for breakfast and £5 for lunch. Anything inside the M25 is higher allowance. Not too shabby to be honest considering what some companies get!

Lucky sod!:p:(

I get paid £22 to sleep in my truck overnight & get £12.50 per day as a meal allowance (Thats Breakfast, lunch & evening meal!)

On the plus side, the view from my "office" varies considerably!!!
