The company i'm doing some contracting through is trying to line up a load of work in the Middle East atm, mainly in Dubia and Bahrain and they are keen for me to fly out soon to talk techi with the customers over there.

Now i'm totally up for a bit of an adventure but i'm wondering if anyone on here is or has recently worked over there and if they can offer any advice?

Cheers
Sam

I know someone got offerd to go to iraq on these forums.
All i know is you should get high pay :D

my advice? duck.

seriously though, dubai and bahrain are pretty stable areas of the middle east, nothing to worry about.
besides, if you go in a few weeks you can catch the first f1 race of the year in bahrain :)

oh hell yer!!! i'll push for that :D its big oil companys that were talking to atm so chances are they would have a box or two at the track :D

Both countrys are completely safe.
Just stock up on condoms before you go because ive heard their are some nastys over there that you wouldnt want;)

I was in Oman for 18 months in total and hated it.

I couldn't deal with the difference in the culture, racism, sexism, police state, double standards and the heat.

If you want ot earn lots go for it make sure you read up on the tax rules first though.

Personally if I see another wadi or camel in the desert in the next 10 years, it is 10 years too soon.

If you do inisit on going out there learn some arabic, learn the symbols for the numbers, learn a little about the culture and religion.

At least that way you can say please and thank you and realise that paying full price in a market is a mugs game.

I thought that it was rude to say thankyou?

Something along the lines of "who are you to thank me"?

Otherwise, those rules pretty much apply to any country, I would have thought.

yer i'll proberbly pick up a rough guide or the like for the lang / culture stuff. Not too sure how much i like the idea of working in a dry nation, but maybe a forced period off the booze would be good for me :)

Should i be looking to get more money if i'm working out there? the place i'm contracting through is UK based and i'm pretty happy with the cash i'm getting, but i don't know if that should increase if i go over there.....

MATTeL, do you have any recomendations on where to look for the tax stuff?

cheers
Sam

Dubai is an awsome city, its got loads of western immigrants so you will fit in more easily. Behrain is a little more "traditional", so you may feel more out of place.
I would love to have the opertunity to work in Dubai in the future, not so much for the high wages, but for the lifestyle.

Just thought you might like to know that the Australian V8 super cars are going to Bahrain this year i think.
So if your interested in them you might wanna pay a viset

The Inland Revenue website to be honest!

You have to be out of the country for a certain period of time to be able to cliam your tax back for the year and it has to be measured between April 5 one year and the next April.

Dubai, Oman and some more "liberal" states are considered damp, you can get alcohol, more expensive but you can get it.

Apart from the culture is very different to any other country I have visited with work and it is many.

Impolite to say "thank you"? Cobblers to be quite frank, in fact manners are extremely highly regarded.

I used to live in Damascus, Syria 6ish years ago (before all this iraq/afganistan buisness anyways) for six years while my dad was being contracted out to some oil company there (geologist for shell). We were there six years or so, and it was some of the best times of my life. I wouldnt be to worried about security as that area of the middle east is very secure, even now with whats going on.

I got offered to work in Iraq for triple salary tax free plus a lump sum at the end of the contract. I told them where to go.
Dubai is great though, lots of things to see and do, and isnt as traditional as the other Arab states.

I have a adobe file of a card that is given to US troops. It focuses on Iraq but gives information about the language, culture and society. If ya want I can e-mail it to ya.
