Working Nights

Hello!

Whats the law on working night shift? Is there any age restriction? Also can you hold another job at the same time?

Thanks

Yes there is an age restriction ( i dont know what it is -16 probably)
No you cant, working nights screws you enough as it is, i used to do 8pm till 8am and pull some overtime as well, sometimes till 1pm.

You feel terrible at the end of the week, i would sometimes go to bed at 10am on a saterday and not wake up till sunday morning.

You have a slightly lower life expectancy if you work nights for a an extended period of time as well IIRC.

Im currently doing 5pm till 9pm but want another job as well -nights. Starting about 10/1030pm and finishing about 6am.

really have a good think, you can certainly try doing 2 jobs, but doing just a night shift really ***** you up. Its unbalivable how much it mess you up. even if you sleep 12hrs every day. it still messes you up..

try it, but if you can try to get days/mornings/evenings..

think the laws 18 for nights?

It's not easy doing nights and that's coming from someone that hasn't even done it. My brothers do night shift frequently and they hate it. It's extremely hard to get into a new sleeping pattern then once you get a night of it's even more difficult to adjust. If there are people in your house during the day whilst you would be sleeping just forget about it alltogether. Juggling two jobs is just unrealistic.

Dont do nights!! Im on the 21st month now and a mess lol. Bad insomnia, etc is only the start of it! Im looking forward SO much to leaving shift work next week!

tbh depends on the person as i could probably do nights no problem as i do sweet all during the day anyhow. however if you have a whole family or flatmates living with you i'd check with them to see if they'd put up with the "be quiet during the daytime" routine. My brother currently does nightshift work at a residential home and we have to be quiet as hell to let him sleep, but tbh sometimes the lazy git stays up meaning he's ****** for the next nightshift.

FULLY star your swearing.

That is a good point. It really annoys me when someone is on the night shift. You make the slightest sound and someone shouts at you. The other people in the house basically don't get to live and it does cause a lot of resentment. I'm off college from Wedneaday for study leave and I'm actually going to my sisters house to spend the day because I couldn't be bothered putting up with people in bed.

Im currently 7 hours into my 12 hour night shift :)

I'm currently working 4 days on 4 days off. The 4 days suck... but the 4 days off RULES!

Soon the shift will be changing to 9 hour days with 4 days work and then 3 days off. Not bad :)

Plus the upside is in the summer - i'll get home at 6:30, straight to bed, 8 hours sleep and im up at 2:30, middle of the day for some bright sunshine :) Go to the park fly my R/C plane or sit outside and have another doze and catch a tan before going to work :)

Yea night shift can be a right slog, I wouldnt recommend having another job as well as working nightshift, unless you are only doing 1 or 2 nights per week. It really can mess you up. I did full time nightshift last summer and it was really depressing, all I did was sleep and work for 3 months. Start work at 10pm get home from work about 8:30, in bed for 9am, wake up at about 6-7 have dinner and then get ready for work. It sucked!

Working nights is really hard, Either your one of those people that have done it for years and love it or your like me and hate it.
I find that I'm ok provided that I'm home and in bed before 3am. The worst thing is driving home at 6am in the summer after a 14 hour shift, as soon as that sun is shining its really hard to go to sleep. Also you need to remember that everyone and their brother is going to be knocking on your door during the day while your trying to sleep.

Legally you are allowed to work both night and days but there is a maximum number of hours over a frotnight you are allowed to work and a minimum number of hours between change over from one to the other (all the infos at work - I'll try to remember to look out the numbers for you today).

Jhadur (my husband) works the continental shift pattern so over a 4 week period his shifts are:
Monday Tuesday nights
Friday Saturday Sunday days
Wednesday Thursday nights
Monday Tuesday days
Friday Saturday Sunday nights
Wednesday Thursday days

All shifts are 6-6. Basically he works every other everything :(

I've been doing nights offshore for about 8 months now and much prefer it to days.

On the rig, it's quieter at nights and out here in the Med it's also cooler, which is a bonus.

I usually do 3 weeks on, 2 weeks off in the North Sea but out here I will be doing 4 weeks on, 4 weeks off, 6-6.

I find it takes me a couple of days to get back into dayshift mode on my time off, which is ok if I have 2 weeks off. Not too good if I only have 1 week off though which has happened quite a bit over the last few months.

As said above, it depends on the person. It suits me fine but some of the guys I work with hate nights.

Stan :)

The problem I have is that I need a couple of hours to wind down before I can sleep and I've recently been working till 3am in the student union bar. So I've not been getting to sleep until 5-6am and with my sleep pattern being as tempermental as it is anyway, I find it very difficult to get back to normal.

I did 10pm-6:30am 5 days a week for just over three months October-November 2005.

It really took its toll on me, mainly because of the fireworks. For a few weeks in November I was getting 2-3 hours sleep a day. I'd get in from work at 7am, wide awake (having been falling asleep driving home) then try to sleep. Usually I'd get to sleep by 8:30am then something would wake me up around 12pm.

I think what did it was working solidly on a nightshift. If I had been two weeks on two weeks off to allow me some normal weekends it might have been more bearable.
